I used to make really terrible AMVs/fanvids back in ye olden times of the mid 2000s, when Linkin Park and Windows Movie Maker were king. That's not the secret.

While fanvid quality in general has gone way up, I really miss the emphasis on the lyrics of a song paired with the perfect visual. The tendency to focus on lines of dialogue has made a lot of fanvids feel samey, as opposed to back when the same clips could be used very differently over "Sexyback" and "In the End."

I've been vidding since the late 2000s, and I feel like I have such an old-school vidding style. I still want to get those perfect lyric/clip matches, important beats, and emotional connection, and I honestly don't know how to add any of those cool effects even though I've graduated from WMM to Vegas. IDK anon, just wanted to say you're not alone.

Not OP but. Yeah, same here. Honestly, I suck at the adding cool events part. I see MEPs by 13 year olds (actually, I've been seeing them for at least ten years now! I vividly remember the UtaPri ones!!) and it's all ah-ma-zingly cute, but not nearly as... interesting, in my opinion, as some badly edited video with a good emotional song and lot of heart.

Don't forget Cascada!

Joking aside, I must say I am semi-thankful that we don't get, like, 5 different renditions of Roxas lipsyncing to "Sexyback" anymore (was it a thing? bet it was) and instead we get nicely edited videos, but I feel you on wanting AMVs to have more of a meaning than just "cool clips you enjoy nicely pasted together".

"Sexy back" was all over the place. I had a Jack Sparrow icon (the gif-y sort of the early 2000s) with the lyrics and clips lol. Didn't make it myself tho, found it in the wild

Oh and what about "anything you can do I can do better"? HOLY FUCKING SHIT

Genuinely, if the images don't at least match up a LITTLE with the lyrics, I don't like the AMV/FMV. Maybe it's because I'm old-fashioned too, but the two things fitting together clearly is what makes it for me, so no matter how nicely edited it is otherwise, it's basically just a pretty thing with no meaning if the meaning isn't edited in.

That’s how I am too.

I love old school fanvids. I have an amazing one saved from the noughties, a Stargate SG1 vid to 'Get Off' by Prince. It's all about Daniel being a ho, has lots of out of context scenes which are filth and is absolutely hilarious. XD

Then of course you have that internet famous Kirk/Spock vid to Closer by NiN.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
That one sounds awesome! I know the Closer one but I'd love to see the SG1 vid.

My current (always?) fave is the Dean Winchester ho one, Exs and Ohs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhquAU3zR-w

Sadly I can't find it anywhere online so I can't share it :(

Thanks for the rec! XD

I totally agree! Vids are really samey now, IMO.

I am also really picky about fanvids.

I made one AMV back in the day, and I deleted it worried I'd get my account copyright struck for it :(. Wish I had the backup files at least but my computer at the time had 8GB of HARD DISK SPACE. I had to delete my AMV to have room for anything at all.

Haven't watched a lot of fanvids lately, but I liked it when there was a balance between matching lyrics/scenes and not. Some pairings got... way too literal and it would throw me out of the vid.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, gotta say I like it when it's literal - as in fits the situation perfectly - but a poetic interpretation of the canon situation. I don't like literal-literal and particularly not when a character lipsyncs to some stupid song that should represent their feelings (what can I say, I may have made one of those when I was a kid).

SPN used to be so good at this. There's a old video to "Stuck in the Middle with You" that gives a hilarious take on the episode of the same name, where the lyrics are spot on. There was a fantastic one re: Sam's time detoxing to Pink Floyd's "Hey You" ugh they were so good.

omg you made me suddenly warp back to 2007 and the entry into AMV Hell contest (deliberately awful AMVs) that was just the same ten second clip of Dragonball Z repeated over and over again to "In the End." Good times in fandom. Good times.

Tangentially related but for some reason my old AMVs have been getting views and comments again. Comments like "I remember watching this after school!" and "My favourite AMV from when I was a teen."

Like...why have my vids resurfaced? They weren't even good.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a vidder, but I'm a huge fan of vids as a fannish art form, and I completely agree with this. The current style of vidding just doesn't do anything for me. Like, yes, it looks very nice, and if it's edited really well it might make me feel like rewatching the source. But that's basically as deep as my appreciation goes. New school vids very rarely feel like they're exploring the source text, and making incisive points, and drawing my attention to certain elements in new ways, or anything like that.

When I watch new school vids, I almost never feel winded by something about the source that the vidder managed to deftly convey.

Honestly, I don't really like when vids include dialogue from the source at all. I've seen a vid or two that managed to use dialogue really elegantly and it worked, but it's really rare. For the most part, I think using dialogue from the source kind of undermines the poetic nature of fanvids as an art form, because the vidder is no longer being challenged to convey meaning through the synthesis of lyrics, music, and images.

I'm sure plenty of people will be all too happy to give me the old, "sure, grandma," and accuse me of being pretentious. But fuck it, whatever. I'm not out there complaining in people's comments threads. I keep my opinions to myself and F!S.

100000% there with you on disliking audio clips in vids. I think they're overused and nine-point-nine times out of ten, add nothing to the vid.

Also holy shit yes, your first paragraph. Vids no longer feel transformative, and that's a shame, because there are so many vids I can name that honestly not only evoked emotion, but made me look at the source canon in a new way.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
the only good modern fanvid that had some dialogue and sounds was hannibal - glitter and gold. Love that. Anything else though? ehhhh

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that Hannibal vid is awesome. I also love the X-Files vid Serenate Immortale, and the SPN fanvid People In Cars Don't Face Each Other, which both have some brief snippets of dialogue. That's about all the one I can think of, though.

old school vid watcher here, and def. agree with you on principle with the new vs old school vids and how they compare

There's like, two vidders of the more recent style whose stuff I like as much as I loved the old school style, but they're really, really good at using their vids to highlight thematic parallels in the source that I would argue the source itself was too amateur/disjointed/created by committee to take advantage of.

Basically their vids feel like visual fanfic of very pretty but mediocre film(s)? I wish I could find more people who are able to capture that same feeling of more recent stuff, but I have no idea where to even begin looking nowdays.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
A) I agree with you very much, and I wish you could provide links, OP (obviously if you don't no problem at all, this is all just making me nostalgic)

B) I find that there are *some* vids that still stick to the old "match the lyrics to the scene"/using effects to highlight the lyrics, like a kylo/hux Fanart vid someone shared here (not exactly like what you're talking about, but not so distantly removed either).

C) I wish I had gotten into vidding. There were so many good ones out there. And even the shitty ones were good
