Personal challenge? Pursuing multiple fields to become enough of a recognized expert so that he's valuable enough General Ross can't just do whatever to him? Hiding his research of his transformation in other research? Research soothes the savage beast?

I mean, I think it would be annoying and exhausting, but people have done it, so it is doable and they had their reasons for it.

Why not? If you love learning and higher education, then you'd very likely just keep on learning and getting ever higher education.
