Volunteering at a domestic violence shelter is activism. Writing your congressman/congresswoman is activism. Speaking out against unfair hiring/promotion practices at work is activism. Choosing not to shop/spend your money at places which discriminate against women (ie. not buying pizza from Domino's since they support pro-life organizations) is activism.

Arguing with people on the internet on a PUBLIC blog (not your fucking blog) is not activism. People are rarely swayed by an internet argument.

First, I think I've been pretty polite here, so I don't think I deserve to be sworn at. Please don't confuse me with any of the anons who are picking at you.

Second, note that "Arguing with people on the internet on a PUBLIC blog (not your fucking blog) is not activism." is not the same as your original statement, "people on the internet don't usually care about what you have to say, period." which is patently untrue.

Third, I think that putting forth an intelligent case and being part of things like International Blog Against Racism Week and keeping up that kind of dialog all year is at least as much activism as not giving Domino's (or Mrs. Fields, or Coors, or whomever else) my $10 that they're not even going to notice. I think that showing even one person why a sexist joke isn't funny, or why SGA has race problems and what they are, or similar, is important. I've had conversations on the internet that have been much more fruitful than ones I've had in person. I can make more substantive change by changing the minds of people, even one at a time, than by thinking that all activism has to be in direct dialog with the dominant power structure.

I understand that you don't agree, but I think you should be a little bit more specific about what you're dismissing, because you're throwing a lot of babies out with that bathwater.
