But nobody cares about what most "internet feminists" have to say, since they usually say it in such a caustic way. Also, people on the internet don't usually care about what you have to say, period. I think it's more important to point out these kinds of things in real life, at work, around people you know, etc.

Were you not implying that the OP should give up and concentrate on "more important" things? That's exactly what I got from this, and that's a silencing tactic. If that's not what you meant, I'd like to know what you did intend with that comment.

I was just pointing out that being vocal about feminist issues on the internet isn't likely to have a fruitful outcome, and that your energies would be better applied elsewhere (unless you think real life activism is a waste of your time). That's not the same thing as telling you not to do it.

Giving someone advice is not the same thing as telling them what to do.

No, I don't think real life activism is a waste of my time, and honestly that comment came off as rather passive-aggressive; based on other comments, I do think you have a narrow idea of activism, though. And yes, being vocal about feminist issues on the Internet does have a fruitful outcome from time to time, just as being vocal about any equality issues does. How do you think the protests against the Avatar movie casting began?

It may not be the same thing, but it still does leave a somewhat bad taste in the mouth.

"Internet activism" always reminds me of people who have hardcore political discussions on the internet and then don't vote. Same for "internet feminism".

You have no idea what someone else does or doesn't do offline, though.
