(Anonymous) 2021-03-13 02:00 am (UTC)(link)I just don't think you can write off the rape thing. It's the tipping point that caused him to choose a soul. Because it revealed that his total lack of morality would ALWAYS make him dangerous.
To me, a vampire's lack of morality comes down to not knowing where the line is. Not understanding why it's not okay to think "I want" and immediately progress to "I'll take." So with that line always being blurry, Spike would never be a real person to her. Just a dog that could, at any moment, bite.
If the attempted rape hadn't happened, I don't know that the suffering he experienced would have made sense. I think they spent so much time letting up on his dangerous side that we, like Buffy and (I personally think) Spike himself, kinda forgot he was dangerous. There had to be a tipping point. A reminder.
I think the only thing I'd give here is that it didn't necessarily have to be rape. He could've done something just as horrible to prove that point without it being specifically rape. But even then, if I were to ask myself what Spike wanted enough to do something truly terrible for, I can't think of anything besides Buffy.
So to me, if you're all in on the idea that he's superior, you kind of have to take the rape into account. It can't be ignored because it's integral to his decision to change.
