Somewhat fucked up opinion incoming: I view the attempted rape basically as the inevitable result of the fucked-up and really badly managed sado-masochistic relationship Spike and Buffy were having. She was in a terrible place mentally, she was using him for sex, he was allowing himself to be used for sex, and they were both just really messed up. I don't think it's the Moral Event Horizon it's treated as in canon and fandom - I think it's just the culmination of two people hurting each other. Both are responsible, neither is to blame, and they both managed to learn and grow and heal.

So yeah. It just... doesn't upset me as much as a lot of the fandom.
