I don't think the point WAS that Russel deserved to die, but that his parents greatly fucked him up with their actions and without his "coping mechanism" of almost not feeling anything at all, and going from that to feeling GUILT in particular with no therapy to help him deal with the overwhelming emotional pain he was dealing with... yeah that wasn't going to end well.

The situation that put him there was awful and the "reform" was incredibly flawed.
