I think both of them suffer from the same problems - 1) they're great when they're playing characters and annoying when they're playing caricatures or "themselves", 2) they were both over-cast (is that a word?)/hard to avoid for a while, 3) by extension, they're both typecast and so audience expectation does more heavy lifting than it should. There were a few movies I've seen in theaters where as soon as WF showed up, people started laughing before he even had a chance to do or say anything funny. That began to grate even on me, who generally finds him entertaining.
