I always assume that the producers and Ayoade himself have already prepped the staff beforehand about the show, since they'd need to set up those segments way in advance.

Wow, I agree, that sounds hella shitty for service workers. (I worked retail for decades, I would hate to serve someone like this, too.)

I assume the situation you see on camera is quite not as natural as it seems and all the locals are aware he is doing an act.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. They don't just turn up suddenly one afternoon with a camera crew, these locations are chosen well ahead of time and have probably been scouted online with e-mail/phone communications, then visited several times by various producers and people involved with the show to set up a schedule, do the lighting, decide what's going to be ordered and how it'll be filmed, etc. I wouldn't worry about it too much, OP.

I was about to say something like this but also I'm sure there's been loads of times where I've got vibes that the locals are snippy with him in return. Probably just part of the act as well but I've visited plenty of places where OTT smiley idiot grin "kiss the customer's arse constantly" service isn't the norm and the people serving you are more reserved. They're still nice and friendly of course, but it's a different atmosphere and in those cases might come across as both Richard and the servers are being rude.

IA, I really feel this about Jack Whitehall too. There comes a point where the interaction becomes more about them milking the other person's responses for laughs and that just hits all sorts of sour notes for me.

Michael Palin never tried that shit, his travel stuff was always deeply respectful of the people and places he went (as far as I could tell). That's what I want out of a travel program.

Michael Palin is a gem, I loved this travel shows and books.

Jack Whitehall has always been trash though.

He doesn't seem like an intentionally nasty person, from what I've seen. His posh clueless inept buffoon stick is something I have fuck all patience for though.

Do tell.

I'm forever baffled at how he remained relevant as a comic tbh. Most of his stuff is just crude sex jokes and posh boy observational comedy.b
