I think it just didn't matter since he wasn't the firstborn.

yeah, with the best will (ha) in the world his entire existence is based around being a spare in case william died in a "hunting accident" or some shit, which hasn't been an issue since the 16th century (ish - there was that whole edward viii business more recently but that was an edge case), and i'm pretty sure that's the source of most of his angst - that he was expected to act like a potential Heir Apparent even though he was never going to be one

well, technically, about half of the british monarchs since george iii have been second sons or heir(ess) presumptives who inherited because someone else died and it bumped them up a spot.
