I think she did understand him, but she was too deranged herself for it to be any sort of GOOD relationship. I just wrote this really long response to someone else about this. I don't think Dexter "loved" her (if we say how he feels for Rita is love), but he did care for her in his way. She looked behind his facade and wasn't afraid. The only other person who had done that was his brother. But he knew that she had to die. It wasn't because she was a 'nuisance'. She killed 3 innocent people (iirc maybe just two) including her ex-boyfriend and Doakes. She was within the code, a loose cannon, and jeopardized his safety.

But. When he went to kill her, he mentioned he gave her a full dosage of the horse tranq so her pain was muted and killed her quickly and efficiently, forgoing his ritual JUST like he did with his brother. He didn't see her as trash that needed to get taken out like his other victims. He saw her like he saw his brother: someone who understood him, was clearly deranged and a threat to him/society who according to the code that he uses to keep himself alive needed to die.

Heh--I wrote a long response to that too!

I think Lila was turned on by murder and as a murderer, he was a turn on, which is why she wasn't afraid. And that was a new thing for Dexter, who tends to think the world is made up of normal people and people like him (as opposed to there being all sorts of other stuff as well).

She fell within the code, and so did Prado and Rudy--I would say for all three of them that he killed them for his survival, not because he had to kill them for the code. He doesn't have to kill people because they break the code, the code allows him to kill, which he enjoys. As you say, she jeopardized his safety, which is what I meant by calling her a nuisance. (I admit that he wouldn't call her that, but that's what she felt like to me as a viewer.)

So while to me it seems like he loved Brian because he was his brother, the difference with Prado and Lila is that they were his mistakes as well as their own. They gave him something--or he imagined they would give him something, so he was complicit in the danger they caused to him. It was right that they got some special treatment for that, but I still don't think it's romantic as the OP suggests. (Also Dexter killed Lila out of town and his usual M.O. was out no matter how he felt because of that.)
