Whether or not yaoi counts as "real gay" (whatever that means), many people do dislike it for homophobic reasons. Sometimes it's really blatant: people who say that it's wrong to be gay, so it's wrong to write good/heroic characters as gay. There's a more subtle version of that, where people just say that slash "insults" the characters. Maybe it's because I'm an evil slash fan, but people who think that it's bad to be gay are usually homophobic.

Then there's the whole "slash dirties pure, platonic relationships". This is a bit more complex, since the overall sentiment ("I think that they're just good friends") isn't homophobic. But there are people who go on about how it's demeaning, degrading, or perverting their love. They say that a romantic/sexual relationship between two men (or two women) is simple, immature and just about sex; to be honest, all of that sounds homophobic to me.

Of course, that doesn't mean that these people are evil violent hatemongers. They may have gay friends, or gay relatives, or even be involved in gay rights in some capacity. Homophobia isn't about good people and bad people: it's a part of our culture that we all buy into to one degree or another.

In case it's not obvious, I'm not saying that everyone who dislikes slash (or yaoi) is a homophobe. If it doesn't appeal to you, or if you can't see those two characters together, or if you only like canon pairings, all of that's fine. And there are a lot of people who have been unfairly accused to homophobia. However, none of that means that it doesn't exist.

Some people do, and that's what I was referring to. The kind of people who equate disliking yaoi for any reason with homophobia.

And I was just pointing out that there are a lot of people who dislike yaoi because they're homophobes. A lot of people seem to forget this.
