I have never seen a bear IRL, I have never been traumatised by a bear movie, I live in a country with no bears at all*, but I am still scared of encountering one. I don't understand how people are all, "Aw, cute, bear in the garbage!" when they will actually fucking eat you!

*Australia. So wrap up all the terror-based ideas people have about Australian fauna, stuff it in a bearskin, and that's how scared I am of bears.

Living in bear country I always find it interesting to hear how many people are scared of bears that have never seen one/will never be in a situation to encounter them. It's pretty funny how many tourist in my country really make a big deal out of seeing them if they go hiking or smth when where I'm from, it'd make more sense to be afraid of cougars than the black bears.

BEARS ARE VERY LARGE AND FAST OKAY! I am entirely prepared to be scared of cougars as well.

I am also scared of crocodiles for the same reason, which are in my country, but not the bit I live in.

Haha yeah. I mean it's just a matter of what you're used to.

A lot of Black bears just casually wander into backyards the closer you are to the forested areas so all you really need to do is just give them space and they go on their way for the most part. They're pretty disinterested in humans as long as you don't leave food out like an idiot, though depends on the species on how chill they are.

Honestly Australia seems more terrifying because of all the venomous insects/arachnids. I'm allergic so I'd honestly rather face a disinterested black bear than spiders in my shoes or smth.
