YES! A little louder for the people in the back!

Suchet IS the best version of Poirot. I can't disagree with anything you said, OP.

Also, wtf is up with that facial hair? The huge mustache, the weird soul patch/goatee thing. Ugh.

i love poirot so i was super excited for the new murder on the orient express. until i saw it. (going from 11 to -12 is a huge comedown.) it's just not poirot! i was actually genuinely shocked when the death on the nile trailer dropped, looking just as fucking awful, bc i had assumed everybody else also hated orient enough not to warrant another one being made.

100% agreed. Although I'd say Suchet is the only Poirot we need.

+100 on Suchet being the only Poirot we need.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-30 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. He is Poirot.

OP

I think I often make secrets hoping for validation, but in this case, I'm oddly disappointed that everyone seems to agree. I guess I was hoping that someone out there could help me see some redeeming quality in these new movies?

I was so bummed about Orient Express, somehow despite all those terrific actors the story was boring and emotionally dead. Like. What a waste. I won't bother with the Nile one. I liked that story too much to see it drained of life.

My parents and I decided we would give the Orient Express one a go, since we had just watched the Suchet one and it came on TV so it was free... we got like 10 minutes in and then turned it off with annoyance.

And that's even with me having issues with some of the changes made to the story in the Suchet version.

Yeah. If I hadn't been watching with a friend I would have definitely turned it off before the end.

I liked Finney and Ustinov best (I know, I know, but something bothers me about the show), but Kenneth Branagh has never, from what I've seen, been able to play a a character that wasn't smugly self-satisfied, which made him a perfect Gilderoy Lockhart and a terrible Poirot, and he's a shit director which makes it even worse.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-30 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Branagh does alright with Shakespeare too. I loved him in Much Ado About Nothing and Henry V. And his Macbeth with Alex Kingston was pretty good.

But yeah, not as good of an actor as I'd hoped and a pretty poor track record as a director.

He was excellant in Wallander. And he played a good bad guy in Tenet.

NA - Haven't seen Tenet, but +10000 about Wallander.

I like Kenneth Branagh, but yeah, this was bad.

It fucking kills me that the 1974 Orient Express is so good but Finney is just... fine. He's the one weak link and because his styling looks so much like Suchet's, I always forget it's not him until I watch the movie.
