Agree that it's the worst reading a completed fic and having to scroll past paragraphs of author's notes. But I hate excessive author's notes period. A quick note here and there, fine, but the ones about everything that's going on in their life, or even the ones at the end like "well here it is! did you guess the twist? I know there's heartbreak and this chapter was so hard to write..." GAH.

I really don’t care. I guess more than 2 paragraphs of notes is a pain, but scrolling by feels pretty easy to me.

Man this is such a non issue. Just scroll past quickly if it's such a big deal. This just feels a little too much like entitlement here :/

If you don't read WIPs you are... probably not a gossipy writer's primary audience.

+1

Hell, they're probably not a WIP poster's primary audience, period. I'm not gossipy and make minimal use of author's notes, but if I'm considering my readers while I'm writing a WIP, I'm considering the people who are following and commenting on the fic while I write it, not people who may at some point drop in to read the finished product.

It's the writer's prerogative to put whatever the heck they want in the notes, but I don't insert personal notes in my stories. I assume people aren't there to read about my personal life, and I'm not about to broadcast personal information on a fiction archive, of all places.

Excessive notes are a hazard of fanfiction. I don't love them and find them self-indulgent -- like excessive tagging -- but it's not a complete deal-breaker if I just scroll right past them.

However, I come late to a lot of fandoms so while there are still WIPs, many fics are actually completed by the time I stumble upon them. So reading the constant apologies about late updates in chapter 5 of a 75-chapter completed fic is amusing but also frustrating. (Yeah, the story is pretty good but you're doing this for free and don't actually owe anyone anything. Or am I just being naive?)

Also, personal details that remind me how young the writer probably is: oh, chapter 11 is late because of a school project? Ok. Let me pause now to feel like a dirty old lady for reading this.
