Not always. As a matter of fact, I was back on my second round when volunteered, and the writer pointed out they might not have anything for me for a few weeks/unknown time. By the time they did provide the chapters, I had forgotten what the original premise was and they were providing updates faster than I could keep up. Additionally, I had kind of moved on from the fandom (I'll come back later -- there's people who don't do multi-fandoms. I just get bored and need something new/different after a while). I should have just told them I wasn't going to be able to help them out, but they seemed pretty cool and went ahead posting their stuff on their own schedule!

I'm totally at fault here though, no excusing that what I did (or failed to do) was an asshole action.

ok I can see how that would be hard to gauge. if anything, I would suggest you do a "trial" beta with people (where you do one chapter and see how if you or they are still into it) and to be upfront that you'll have to reassess if there's some delay. as long as you've never dropped beta-ing in the middle of things, that should give you some space to see how you're dealing in the fandom.
