I think it's was mostly an ironic send up for why you can't date your dog turned serious storyline. Mr. Peanutbutter does big expressions of love (which is how he keeps marrying people) but has no emotional depth or honesty. Diane for her part liked having someone focus on her, but finally realized that Mr. Peanutbutter was not going to cure her mental health issues or unhappiness, which was mostly why she was with him.
