I have several friends who have lived and worked in Japan and the consensus from them is that, while it's a great place to live for a while, they couldn't imagine spending the rest of their lives there because it still IS rather on the xenophobic side.

That's basically what I hear from returning friends. (JET is a really popular program in my area, and not just with anime fans.)

That's largely why I opted NOT to do JET myself and instead stay here in the US. Still working for a Japanese organization, just not actually in Japan.

I've lived there, worked there, and went to school there myself, and I totally agree with this.

Hell, I've only spent a grand total of a month and a half there, but I could feel it as well. As much as I love Japan, I really wouldn't want to live there.
