Yeah, this is a fine approach.

I don't even get mad anymore either, I just find it funny. Maybe because so many worse things happened to BL in the past 10-ish years that now I'm like, give me the yaoi hands! Give me the wimpy ukes! Nostalgic, lovely!

...okay, that's actually really helpful. I don't care about the height thing so much, but it drives me insane when one character is suddenly Muscled Butch Growly Guy and the other character is suddenly Tiny Femme Tearful Guy when I want to read about two canon characters in a relationship. But now I can just say, oh, A put on the Seme costume and B put on the Uke costume, guess this fic isn't for me.

I need to find my own coping mechanism too. The cringe I feel when I see another gag-inducing reiteration of "smol and tol" or whatever the fuck is becoming worrying.

No kidding. The other day I saw a fic that had a bunch of positive comments in a comm, and so although it wasn't a fandom I was familiar in, I tried reading it...

I honestly couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be an adult in a sexual relationship with a toddler (because sex was actually mentioned), or if the one character just canonically acts and talks like a toddler for some reason despite being an adult, or if it was yaoi tropes that everyone who left those comments is not grossed out by. :/

I honestly have no idea. The "toddler-esque" character got picked up at one point, but I don't know if that was supposed to be because they are literally a child or just smaller than the seme and therefore child-like or what. -_-

I went back over it a couple times trying to figure out what the deal was and decided I really didn't want to think too hard about what was going on with a character getting picked up and responding with something like "but I don't wanna have sex, I'm sleepy!" Whether it was age play or underage or just super-tropey, not my thing.
