I don't like when canonical characters take on Mary Sue vibes. However, projecting onto your fave is a very different thing than inventing an entirely new character to come in, disrupt the dynamic, and potentially upstage your fave.

If you can't see why someone who was heavily identified with Canon Character A (and heavily invested in Canon Character A/Canon Character B) would hate Mary Sue for coming in, making the story all about herself, and making Canon Character B fall instantly and madly in love with her, then I don't know what to tell you.
