Maybe it's... a style? A very recognizable one at this point?

Why can people accept all sorts of ugly stylized art in western media but not in Japanese media goddamnit

Not OP

I can't stand ugly stylized art in any media lol but that's all fairly subjective, I'll allow.

Western media ugly: Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Rugrats (good show tho), all that CalHouse style going on now (Steven Universe & the like).

Anime (in particular): one piece, half of the shit that's 3D/CG or blended ugh, I'm trying to think about some, but I generally avoid the ones I don't find nice to look at. I avoided AoT for a while because I thought it was ugly. I'll allow some of the cheaper quality because it makes me nostalgic about the old animes I used to watch. You may see more listed in my Western Media, but that's based on what was available to me at the time/if other kids were around we HAD to watch X. I do love Courage. But that was ugly but creative and weird and drew me in. Anime was a question of accessibility. As an adult who can pay for content, I'm much more discerning these days.

As I said, all subjective!

AYRT - Yeah, agreed and not a fan of those styles either. I don't think AoT is pretty, but I don't think it's ugly either. I suppose Courage wasn't among my favorites back then because I thought it was ugly. And I'm not a fan of Higurashi/Umineko/what's-the-name-of-this-series-again's style either and it's probably why I never gave it a try, yet gave a try to... fairly bad series which happened to have interesting art. (I AM looking at you, Uta no Prince Sama lol.)

I was much more complaining about how I see some people being extremely picky in regards to anime and manga art (and I'm saying this because my favorite manga is "known", among the few people who know it, for having horrible art, and objectively speaking, I can see how it's lacking in the anatomy department but still They Tried...) and the very same people seem to be accepting of CalArts style, like not even trying is somehow better than trying and failing and only improving in later chapters/renditions or whatever. Somehow they hold higher aesthetic standards for anime and manga. Way higher, actually. Obviously, this doesn't apply to... every person on this planet.

AYRT

Oh yeah, no I figured you were referring to those specific people, I just wanted to comment lol

I just started Uta no Prince Sama and lol why am I still here. I'm really thrown by their noses and the heroine's eyes....girl looks blind except when she's crying!!!

Oh I really like the boys' looks/proportions and the color palette for the main group in general, she does have creepy-ish eyes though. Then Again, I'm trash for colorful shoujo art.
