I think it's pretty much this. I'd also like to add that maybe there's an additional component readers of those fics not wanting to see men in a sub role (speaking specifically for het fic, and not strictly in a sexual dynamic either, but what a submissiveness in personality may also imply, if the M character isn't already like that).

But in general, people write what they vibe with/want to see, +1.

I love seeing two assertive/dominant characters in het fic. I don't mind the "usual" dynamics as long as the woman isn't simpering and doe eyed (ugh). But again, that's something that alot of people may be looking for, to be taken care of (instead of taking care of someone else in a particular manner).
