I feel like...Homer being a Boomer Dad is what half his personality is based on.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! His childhood in the late 60s with hippie-mom Mona and then his and Marge's high school years in the 70s with Marge's Farrah hair, lol. You can't Gen-X Homer (or marge) and expect it not to make things weird. It's the Simpsons, it doesn't have to be perfect in terms of timelines.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely! I was a 90s teen. My friends and cousins have kids now. Homer is NOT my generation, or how my generation parents (in general, there is always a variety).

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in 20 years he'll be a Zoomer, so that'll solve that problem /joke

It's incredibly ahistorical and dumb and annoying, but it also is only a symptom of the larger problem that they should end the fucking show. It's no stupider than any other aspect of the show being on the air in tyool 2021. So basically anything the people in charge of the show say about it is gonna be dumb.

I thought they jumped the shark when they turned Homer into Kurt Cobain in that one episode where Marge dates the college professor, but making Homer a ‘90s teen sounds even dumber.

Ugh yeah, that episode was BAD

I get that this is an issue with adding time references in the first place (back in the 90s) but seriously what was wrong with basically declaring Springfield exists in a suspended timeline? Even technological advances and newer world leaders can be hand waved because they managed fine with birthdays and Christmas yet nobody ages.

plus they had 1950's style phone exchanges and Lisa getting the mumps in episodes that were aired in the 90's when the show was still good.

Exactly! Just make it an actual bizarre mashup of everything.

Find it interesting that updated contemporary references is what made the Futurama comeback suck as well, and that was arguably worse. Why would Fry care about the head of a dead celebrity from well after he was frozen? For example. You’d think the writers would learn.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because one of the best things about early Simpsons was precisely its cultural specificity

shouldn't "hip hop" be reversed in the mirror??

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been dead on the inside since series 8 so I'm not at all surprised.

Honestly Nu!Simspsons feel like such a different show that them doing stuff like this is nothing new.

Also remember the time Homer and Marge where in college... in the 90's...

Yeah, that's stupid.

The inconsistencies in timeline are annoying - born in 1956 and high school senior in 1974 and 34 when the show started, but then 40 in season 18. Mostly because it's inconsistent in different ways. But, whatever, this show just seems to retcon whatever it wants, whenever it wants. I cannot believe it is in season 32.

Are we comparing this to the traditional 70s teenagerhood or to that episode where he was in his 20s in the 90s?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
His dad is still a world War 2 veteran and Skinner is still a Vietnam vet even though that doesn't work at all

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched this for ages, but TV writers looooooooove the 90s because they're all in their 40s and 50s now and it was their glory days.

(Speaking as a geezer myself. It's so obvious. I can see why people are tired of it. We had this in the late 70s, when every friggin' thing was set in the 1950s.)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Back in the 90's I was in a very famous TV show
