Western fangirls have a really hard time not equating "pretty dude" with "totally gay". The whole "Asian men are so effeminate and therefore gay" is a harmful stereotype as well, and one the fangirls, wittingly or unwittingly, gladly believe in. And the way they get creepily overinvested in their personal lives based on that and the way some of them start obsessing over every good looking Asian man they see on the street is pretty fetishistic.

There is admittedly an unfortunate overlap of Kpop stans and BL fans, but I really don't think "my idols are gay" is a prevailing stereotype since these idols are supposed to be objects of desire for the fans as well. It isn't unique to Kpop fandom either. And honestly, I don't think fan obsession, even the problematic, creepily sexual kind, is on the same cultural level as "yellow fever". It's still objectification, but it traces its roots from celebrity culture.

As a kpoppie - you do realize they deliberately market that kind of fanservice don't you? Yeah, gatekeepers will exist in any and every kind of rpf fandom. But trust me, the vast majority of kpop fans are actively AGAINST them.
