117. God, same here to a ridiculous degree. I like to believe that MGS2's ending was where the timeline really ended, and MGS4 takes place in a VR AU where Kojima hates everyone for not liking MGS2 enough.

Fucking worded. Everyone needs to do this with every character they ever go out to write. Craft/study a personality, work with it, don't make it ridiculous, keep it consistent, respect the character for who they are when you're writing them. How is this suddenly a race issue?

I really don't know. Elizabeth Bear, a writer I consider very thoughtful and wellspoken, said pretty much the same thing, and there was a whole kerfuffle. The way I see it, it's like gender; the environment a character is surrounded by and how it reacts to them is absolutely going to affect them, but it's not source of their themness. But I can understand where being a part of a culture that gets co-opted and paraded around without any real understanding of it could get real annoying fast. Of course, I'm the approximate color of Wonderbread, and writing a thing where one main character is albino and the other is greenish, so I don't know.

I've heard the name Elizabeth Bear, but I've been kind of keeping away from much of the race wanking that's been going on lately.

I get needing to research a culture and how that culture affects a character and makes them act, but that's the same for any character, no matter what the colour or anything else.... I don't think doing the proper research for a character is a race issue, that's all. And if that's all that author said and she got dogpiled as a racist for it? Wow, I'm kind of disgusted.
