107 JKR sucks for that move. I loved Lupin, too, and I thought that was a lameass little plot point she put in there.

110 "Delusional" Kataang shippers, or "delusional" Zutara shippers? I don't get what you're saying here. Also, can we stop calling shippers "delusional" please? Whether they were "right" about canon or not?

112 Total sell-out check?

126 I hope it doesn't get to that, but it certainly might.

129 You need to read [livejournal.com profile] nojojojo's post We Worry About It Too (http://nojojojo.livejournal.com/161692.html). Basically: You should write them, but think about it first, just like you hopefully would with any other character that is not you. And then if someone calls you on a thing, listen to them, think about what they said, and don't get crazy defensive about it. The whole, "I'm a precious flower who will just write all-white universes rather than open myself up to criticism" is really, really tired—especially given the reaction of many slash-writing fangirls to what gay men have to say about their stories.

154 Dude, there's like, 12 episodes. However TOTALLY AWESOME they are, I don't know if they can support some ginormous fandom.

161 I support all sports rps. Thanks for the comm!

165 Actually I think it's fucking HYSTERICAL. I'd love some Michelle as Cleopatra Jones; after all, her bf in the movie is totally a neighborhood organizer!

169 Seriously, people need to chill the fuck out about all this ridiculous "If you are sitting on a couch when you make your secret I JUDGE YOU" bullshit.

Re: 107

Well, I should preface this by saying that I'm one of those HP fans who really hated the last three books.

I don't know what she got from Lupin having that reaction, other than another moment for Harry to show how awesome he is. It was really unnecessary and didn't actually lead anywhere, or give us more depth or understanding or really anything. She hadn't done a good enough job with his character to prepare us for that moment at all. However, given how she dealt with character in those books (ie, you are who you will always be at the age of 11, and you will never change) I stopped being surprised.

Re: 107

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that she didn't suggest that in his character at all prior to that, but I also disagree with you that the characters never changed or grew up.

i think it's more or less implied, what with the sorting and all.

my opinion isn't that drastic, but categorizing people like that when they haven't even reached maturity yet doesn't seem like a great idea. it sounds sort of limiting.

Re: 107

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Jumping in here: I think we did get some information that should have hinted at this. In PoA, he doesn't tell Dumbledore about Sirius' ability to transform, for fear of what that will say about him as a boy. That's pretty freakin' cowardly, IMO.

It took me a long time to be able to accept what happened with Remus in DH, but I got there. It certainly helps that it pretty much justified everything I'd ever said about the Remus/Tonks relationship.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what did you gather about their relationship pre-DH?

Re: 107

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
That she was pressuring him into it, basically. That he wasn't as prepared for it as she was, but was convinced to give it a shot despite his own wishes. I never actually got the feeling that he wanted her-- it was, instead, that he was being presented with her love, and told to act on it.

The fact that he bailed on her and their son pretty much says "I never wanted this to begin with", to me.

Re: 107

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's the way it came across to me too. I didn't think he was gay or was in love with someone else specifically, but that scene where everyone is saying how he's wrong for not marrying her...I figured it was supposed to come across as everyone getting Lupin to grab happiness, but it came across more like he didn't want to get married but couldn't stand up to everyone else's judgment. Then there's mostly focus on how happy she looks while he looks unhappy right away in DH. So it just never got associated with joy or love in my head, just Remus running away, Tonks chasing him and everyone else telling him to go back to her.

Re: 107

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
For sure. I actually was pretty convinced that he had been Polyjuiced into a spy for the bulk of the book, he was acting so out of character (IT IS I, REMUS LUPIN!), so it took me a while to wrap my head around his actions. The fact that I love him so much is how I made it work-- it changed how I thought of him as a character, but that's fine, since rejecting what we get in canon isn't something I like to do.

I wrote huge rants on Remus/Tonks when HBP first came out, because so much of fandom was loving it, and I had all these warning flags going up in my head. I don't know if it's what JKR meant to do, but it was certainly the end result.

Sadly, if you read some of the comments even here on f!s even now so long after the shows ending about the characters, moments in the show, etc. the word might still be appropriate.

And the use of the word in my opinion has nothing to do with whether one likes canon or fanon, but how one clearly misinterprets and twists or warps the show material.

Re: #110

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I was an H/H shipper (though not in canon, I just liked reading and writing H/H fic) and I still bristle at the word. I have found that delusional is in the eye of the beholder, most of the time. It is used so loosely, just to insult people who have a differing interpretation of canon.

That said, is this secret saying that the Kataang shippers are delusional, or the Zutara shippers are? I don't get what that's all about. The OP seems to be pointing out a moment in the show, saying they don't like it, then going on to say something about "delusional" fans that doesn't make any sense.

Me, I'm a Sokka/Suki shipper, so I guess I'm delusional, too.

Re: #110

(Anonymous) 2009-01-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I find I am a bit more tolerant of the word. Considering that Kataangers have been called far worse - childish, unimaginative, pedo, etc. all because of shipping preferences.

Fantastic link. I don't worry about writing PoCs - if I screw up my fantasy world, oh well, but it doesn't map onto real life exactly. I do, however, worry about drawing them. Do you know of any art-related materials for that?

Re: 129

Writings about art involving PoCs and avoiding perpetuating stereotypes without doing their exact opposites.

Well, I did run across something on deviantart a while ago, a series of tutorials that mapped some of the differences clearly between different races, and different sub-groups of those races. I can't, however, vouch for the accuracy of it, and I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for.

The whole, "I'm a precious flower who will just write all-white universes rather than open myself up to criticism" is really, really tired

I can't help but think that this kind of response is one of the things that makes people that are becoming more aware about racism discouraged. Shouldn't we give people who are actively trying to be more racially aware the benefit of the doubt? I'm not saying people should just let racism go--even if it is subtle and thoughtless rather than deliberate--but I'd be more welcoming towards the people that are on our side.

I understand being frustrated at hearing the same thing a thousand times. But it's different people saying it, and I think helpful advice like the first part of your comment will do much more than putting them on the defensive. Now, if they reply to that with "I'M NOT RACIST STOP BEING OFFENDED", then making them uncomfortable seems more reasonable.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
First, becoming aware of racism is discouraging for everyone. It's a discouraging topic.

Second, why doesn't anyone give this line about being afraid of writing people different than them when it's about gender or sexual orientation? Why don't people say "oh, I'm worried that boys will say my boys aren't right, or lesbians will say my lesbians aren't right, or Brits will say 'that isn't right.'" But they don't—and in the last case, they get Brit-pickers, and are fine that there is knowledge they don't have. Why can't people have the same attitude about writing people of another race?

Third, your comment implies that I should be grateful that someone is being more aware of racsim. I'm not; it's their responsibility as a person on this planet, if they live in a mixed race society, to become aware of it. Of course I want to be helpful, but I'm not going to say, "oh thank you for taking a moment to try to understand race in US/UK/etc." See, it's this worrying about the feelings of white people to the detriment of the feelings of everyone else that gets us into this place in the first place. Why is it that the feelings of a writer more important than the feelings of a reader who is offended by a portrayal?

Also, I think I was perfectly even tempered in my response. I gave them some resources, then I said, "and don't say that again, because it's tired." Because you know what? IT IS TIRED.
