I've read so many fics it is hard to have all time favorites. But below are a couple I go back to (that have not been deleted).

Amateur Theatrics. https://archiveofourown.org/works/373529/chapters/608969
A Winter's Tale. https://archiveofourown.org/works/2654327/chapters/5930561
Unusual Weather https://archiveofourown.org/works/1892094

Oh shit! It’s on.

Well, this one barely counts as fic since it’s so AU you don’t even need the source material: ‘Patience, a steady hand’ by Helenish. Inception, E, Viking slave AU (I know, shut up! It’s good), warning for non-con, though not gratuitous. https://archiveofourown.org/works/170021

Also, this other one by Helenish, also Inception, E: ‘Pants on Fire’ https://archiveofourown.org/works/177509

Most of my fav fics (that are not just smut) are Inception for some reason, so here’s one more: ‘Breaking and Entering’ by Resonant. Inception, E https://archiveofourown.org/works/225612

A River Without Banks by Chryse - Sherlock, looong, Johnlock. By far the best time-travel fic I've ever read. Probably the best time-travel fic I'll ever read.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/3204689/chapters/6969521

They Put Me In A Cage Full Of Lions by Amerella - SPN, shortish, gen. A look at Sam & Dean as young children, from young Dean's perspective. One of the most exquisite and devastating explorations of childhood trauma I've ever read, anywhere. I'm not even in the SPN fandom and this fic still makes my Best Of All Time list.
https://web.archive.org/web/20080131094458/http://amerella.livejournal.com/138014.html

Revelations by the Ride To Church anon - Starker, long. Easily the best Starker fic out there; it exemplified everything I want from this pairing. Also one of the only fics I've ever read where each sex scene held me utterly riveted from beginning to end and never once diminished the delicious, delicious tension.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/16508027/chapters/38664932

Universal Invariants by Syntax6 - X-Files, long, MSR. Everything by Syntax6 is amazing. She's a successful professional author now, and I'm not even surprised.
http://www.omniscribe.com/universal.html

Parabiosis by Penumbra - X-Files, medium length, MSR. An all-time fandom darling, absolutely gorgeous, though if you can't handle poetic prose it may not be your cup of tea.

Man, Chryse is so good. ‘River Without Banks’ is great, but there’s one timeline that’s just too brutal for me to handle.

I like ‘A Waste of Breath’ by Chryse, Sherlock, E, Sherlock is on the spectrum, warnings for rape, abuse. It’s also brutal, but so, so good.

Anabasis by starkadder

I will go to bat for this fic until the end of time, I don't even love the fandom (Carmilla) that much any more, but I just think the character work is so well done in this, the prose is so well-executed, and the metaphysical mystery-y stuff is so well done.

Out of curiosity, do you know if Astolat has written any Drarry fics where Harry is the more dominant character? From what I’ve read so far, she seems to prefer a slightly dominant Draco. Not heavily so, necessarily, but a little. He tends to be the more forceful and domineering personality as well as the one who tops more. Her writing is excellent, but my preference tends strongly towards a slightly dominant Harry, and I’ve been waffling over whether to try more of her fics for a while now.

On a separate note, I watched her Drarry fanvid for the first time just a few days ago and holy shit, it’s so freaking good!

I don't know for sure. I'm going to say no, because I'm pretty sure I've read ever Harry/Draco fic they've written, but my memory sucks, so....

Sorry I can't be of more help!

That vid is *awesome*.

I can't stand Astolat's Starry fics. They're so painfully American.

Ooooooooooooh, boy.
*rolls eyes*

Tell me, o super-wise one, how are they 'so American', and why do you care if I or anyone else likes them, and why is this supposed 'Americanism' such a big deal?

Please explain, since you obviously really wanna go off about it.

How typical.

Re: All time favorite recs thread

(Anonymous) 2021-04-15 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
How exactly? If you don't want to know you don't want to know? You seemed to expect that I would want to spend a chunk of my time typing something out even though you clearly weren't interested. You made it obvious you expected that of me.

Then when I didn't, 'how typical'.

Yeah okay. Whatever. You didn't want to know, I'm not going to be wasting my time.

Re: All time favorite recs thread

[personal profile] tabaqui 2021-04-15 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
'Typical' because you make a big point of how awful the stories are, then say something insulting when that comment doesn't get a rise. Then when I actually ask, it's 'nah'.

Why make the comment in the first place if you didn't want to explain just exactly how terrible the stories are? (Or how terrible Americans are or whatever your point is).

Why bother, out of all the recs, to pick out *just one* and say something nasty about it? What are you trying to prove? What's the point? I saw a rec in this thread of a story that I loathe and will never, ever read again, but oddly, I didn't feel the need to make a pointed comment to the person who really likes it about how awful it is.

Re: All time favorite recs thread

(Anonymous) 2021-04-15 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Painfully American is a critique, not an insult. It's Astolat, she could write a shopping list and it would still be interesting. That makes it interesting to me that she missed the mark so widely for her HP fic, because she's pretty much the best fic writer out there.

'Ignorance is bliss' was not intended as an insult. After the last year and a half it's a heartfelt statement.

You didn't ask, you said 'o tell me wise one' or some such sarky bollocks, which is internet for 'i want a fight', and I'm just really not up for that. It's been a fucking awful day.

The reason I mentioned Astolat's drarry was because it's so ooc for her to miss the mark. Hell she even nailed Patrick O'Brien's style while writing mpreg. Also if I was reading an American fandom written by a Brit and an American told me it was culturally skewiff, I'd find that incredibly interesting and want to know more because that's the kind of stuff you just don't find out unless a native tells you. You weren't interested, the you wanted a fight. Not sure what else you expected?

[personal profile] tabaqui 2021-04-15 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No, i didn't want a fight. I was and am annoyed by someone who decided to pick out a single rec in a list of recs, and tell the person who obviously likes the stories there that 'hey, this series sucks'.

Sorry if you think that's polite chit-chat. To me, it's a way to poke at someone, try to make them feel small, and try to make yourself feel bigger.

You're Anon - i haven't the slightest idea if you're a Brit, an American, or a Martian, just that you felt the burning need to say 'hey, your rec sucks'.

I expected someone who was that insistent that their opinion be aired to go on and explain, because then at least there would have been a point to the original comment, but no - you backed out 'cause i didn't ask with the appropriate delight, awe, and humble anticipation, or something.

You go on and enjoy your day, I'm going to re-read some fics I enjoy and possibly, because why not, revel in the 'Americanness' (wtf that means) of them.

Ta ta.

Kill Strike Trigger by Ilethe

https://archiveofourown.org/works/6068986/chapters/13910902

MCU, Bucky-centric with a focus on post-WS recovery and relationship building with the rest of the Cap Quartet. It gets very dark but never loses hope or heart. And it has some of the best action I've ever read in a fic.
