You're on the right track, but in kink/rl terms, Dominant and Submissive are roles in a D/s relationship, and while the minor details of what a Dom and a Sub want out of their particular relationship, there are very much certain expectations for both roles.

Granted, in a lot of yaoi manga tradition, the top does have a lot of Dom traits and the bottom has a lot of sub traits, but it's not a one-to-one equal correlation. Throw in the way fandom likes to say they hate the seme/uke dynamic but then writes the same thing in their fic and labels it Dom/sub, well...the waters are very muddy, there. You're not wrong to be confused.
