The world would be a better place if more artists felt comfortable being smug.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-15 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Smug makes for terrible art and always has done, because smugness almost always leads to complacency and then mediocrity in short order.

Being overly critical of your own work, which many artists are, also can lead to terrible art ala burnout. Far more artists hate on themselves here in the digital age than act smug about it; I see way too many people beating themselves up for not being good enough. Life is too short to over burden oneself with the fear of 'mediocrity', a theme that in itself is too subjective to bring others down with.

Okay, but that doesn't mean you have to be smug either.

I'm gonna be real here, any time I have encountered an artist who came across as smug (as opposed to just, like, confident) I have always instantly disliked that artist and their work. smugness is inherently obnoxious

I wish I knew your name because I want to put this in my quote file and attribute it to the person who deserves the credit.

I like it. I think that if it came out now I wouldn't enjoy it as much, but Leaves of Grass came out 160 years ago and it was groundbreaking.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-15 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah it's good

(Anonymous) 2021-04-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Things can be good and someone can still not like them tho, if there's one thing that's subjective it's individual taste in poetry

(Anonymous) 2021-04-15 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Walt Whitman’s work, but this Simpsons bit is still great and possibly appropriate for you, OP:

I mean, I've never actually met someone who likes Leaves of Grass as a whole, but that could just be my encounters. But there's so much of the Leaves of Grass as individual stanzas that is so good. I also think the smugness is pretty brave considering, so. Knowing Whitman's history, and his participation in the "free soil party" tho, like...yeah he's def smug in the particular way of men who believe they should work very little but still control events much more than those who work a whole bunch.

That said I feel the same about the Beatniks, every last one, and everything about Oscar Wilde, and Hemingway, Fitzgerald, but unlike Whitman I think it's the educational institutions these people hung around in frankly.

I'll give Wilde a pass because he amuses me, but omg I hate the beatniks so much

For some reason I really wanted this Secret to be written in the style of Dr Seuss xD

It's not a requirement to experience a connection with all LGBTQ artists.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-16 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You say that, but if I’m audited and don’t have enough Queer points I’ll lose my accreditation.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-16 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You say that, but considering I literally just saw an article that someone wasn't "black enough" because they didn't have enough black friends... well...

(Anonymous) 2021-04-16 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I am not a poetry 'fan', so I didn't even know WW was queer.
