Which poets do you like and/or dislike?

Inspired by today's secret #1.

It's not strictly poetry as put to music, but the lyrics to O Fortuna are a trip. Carl Orff was having a bad fucking day when he wrote it. It's my favorite emo poem by far.

Carl Orff didn't write those lyrics, the texts of the Carmina Burana are hundreds of years old.

It's a fandom cliche at this point but Richard Siken.

It may be a cliché but I've never heard of him lol. Going to check him out now.

I hate Philip Larkin and I won't stop hating him until I'm deep in the cold ground. Disingenuous arrogant little shit and the fact that he had an incredibly fine technical command of meter and language only makes it worse.

May I have some examples of his arrogance? You've made me curious.

The only poetry I've ever really liked was the Shel Silverstein stuff. Otherwise, just not a fan.

I like Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allan Poe. I don't like Shakespeare. I respect his work and understand why people like his sonnets (and plays), but I'm just not a fan of them.

Poets I dislike: all the ones whose "poems" are just prose with line breaks.

Yesterday
I went to the store
And bought some flour
And butter and eggs
To make a cake
But I forgot
To buy
Sugar

Novels that are written as a collection of related poems are soooo guilty of this.

I really enjoy Maxine Kumin, and Robinson Jeffers.

I got one of Ms Kumin's books as a gift from my Aunt when I was a pre-teen, and I have just loved her stuff ever since.

I love T.S. Eliot. I don’t even care if The Wasteland makes no fucking sense. I love the visuals it inspires.

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is my favorite poem of all time. Yes, I’m a plebe.

Rainer Maria Rilke
Irving Layton
Audre Lourde
Maya Angelou
Rumi
Pablo Neruda
Ana Akhmatova

(Yes, some of these are very common, oh well)

I'm not a big fan of Emily Dickinson! I feel like there's other people i like, but I forget. :(

I like Poe, Edward Gorey, Shakespeare, many Japanese poets, Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde, Ogden Nash, Maya Angelou, Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Lord Byron, Keats, Shelley, Longfellow and a lot of others.
I dislike any poetry I've read in the bible (and not just because I'm an atheist but also for purely aesthetic reasons) and almost all the poetry I've read in the New Yorker magazine.

Any love out there for John Cooper Clarke? I'm not sure I love his stuff, but I find it fascinating.

I've got to go back to reading and listening to Andrea Gibson. They made such a difference to me in college.

Perhaps it's also time to get into some new queer spoken word poets.

Something like 20 years ago I was in an RP where for some reason someone else in the RP suggested a character I was playing was into Yeats, whom I was unfamiliar with, since I'm not really a poetry fan. So I was like "okay..." and looked some stuff up...

...Yeah, I can get behind that myself, as well as the character in question being into it.

I used to be the sole member in Arthur Rimbaud fandom back when I was a teen. I think I liked his bright but problematic persona as I was very bright but problematic (and young, then) myself and that made me find refuge and comfort in his abstract, "vibes" poetry.

I also like local poets a lot but naming them would be outing myself too much.

... Also, can I say Pete Wentz cuz I've been having a blast lately. This is a joke but it's not a joke that I decided to closely inspect FOB lyrics in a "mall emo throwback" and found more things to appreciate (even if in a "wow teenage me felt that" way only) than to mock. There's so much intertextuality too, for real. I actually felt inspired to write my stuff. But anyway. To each their own lmao

Francis William Bourdillon wrote one of my favorites - The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. I like many of Robert Frost's poems. I think Ogden Nash and Shel Silverstein can be very clever. Maya Angelou's poems can be pretty amazing and part of that is her recitation. I like works that have a very strong cadence, like Poe's The Raven or Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride, so I tend to like Shakespeare and Seuss.

I like some of Emily Dickinson's poems, but others leave me cold.

I don't really care for Percy Bysshe Shelley.
