I'm trying to write a romance story right now, and I'm struggling a bit with the kissing scenes because everything I write about mouths comes out sounding really gross. I don't want to be like, "They kissed, the end." But I also do not want to talk about tongues. It's a fine line to balance on.

Talk about how the point of view person feels about the kissing, instead of mentioning the tongues.

It’s amazing how few movies or shows feature kissing that I actually enjoy. I hate when actors smash their faces together, especially in older cinema. I’ve never seen anyone kiss like that in real life.

I don't know what the point of tongue-on-tongue kissing is, or how to do it right if I had to.

If it's the right person, it's fantastic. With someone with whom you're not kiss-compatible, it's unpleasant.

This. When you're really into/attracted to the person, it's great. Otherwise... meh.

As an ace person, I find it really frustrating that no matter what I just can't truly understand kissing. Like, I can understand sex at least passably, because I can wank and use toys and read fanfic smut to get turned on and whatnot. But I cannot experience kissing in a positive way. I've kissed a good ten or twelve people, but it's always just been the sensation of lips and tongues on lips and tongues. Nothing remotely pleasurable or exciting about it. It was repulsive the first couple of times, so I'm equipped to describe a repulsive kiss, or an indifferent kiss. But I can't really know the experience of a pleasurable kiss, and I hate describing things I have absolutely no frame of reference for. :/

I love kissing and my first kiss was like someone sticking a peeled hotdog in my mouth. Disgusting.

I don't know what to tell ya. I know people who aren't asexual and don't enjoy kissing at all either, though. You don't need to describe kisses in any kind of detail, though -- a tender press of lips and inhaling the person's scent or something is sufficient. I think most of the appeal of kisses in fiction is the anticipation.

It depends on how the kiss is described or shown onscreen for me. I don't wanna know all about tongues dancing together and spit being exchanged or see two actors look like they're gonna start eating each others faces.

I kind of get it. To be honest, I have little interest in watching the majority of sex scenes. I always feel like I'm creeping on something, ridiculous as that sounds.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this way too! It's weird because I love fanfic smut. But yeah, sexytiems in movies and TV tend to make me vaguely uncomfortable, like I should avert my eyes and excuse myself. Actually, even sex scenes in original fiction sometimes make me feel this way. I think if the author does a really good job of making me feel connected to the characters and invested in their relationship then I can get into it without discomfort. But if I'm not super invested I end up feeling like an accidental voyeur.

NAYRT
I'm the same way. I think it's because it's not the reason I'm there. If I go looking for smut or fanfiction I'm there for the sex or the potential of sex happening. If I'm watching an action movie I'm not thinking, "Oh boy, I hope there's a sex scene!" Even if I'm 90% certain the movie is going to have a sex scene (a lot of them do) it's still not something I'm wanting to see.
Plus I find erotic scenes a lot more appealing in text or illustrations than on screen.

I'm not grossed out all the time, but I'm very particular about kisses so I sorta feel you. Animation is better at this for my purposes.

Yeah, same. Mostly it's just kinda...meh, sometimes weird, and when they dub in all sorts of smacking, wet noises, it's just totally gross.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't pay much attention to kissing scenes tbh, even when I ship something canon. Kisses are cute? They're fine? Idk? Also sometimes they're straight up gross with one half shoving their tongue so deep in the other's mouth it looks like their reaching their tonsils and I just... don't get how that's supposed to look appealing.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
2. I just don't pay attention to an extent that could gross me out, unless it's particularly... badly done.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol depending on how they are i feel the same.

If it's Tongue Dance Battle 3, I'll see myself out.

If it's a cute little peck, and surprising and sweet, that's cute. And if it's getting too steamy...it depends.

In writing, I'm trying to focus on how the kiss makes the character feel. Less tongue action, more "what is this feeling inside me?!"

i don't mind it in fiction, but like... loud kissing noises? i'm vaguely nauseous, it's the WORST

i know some of it is possibly foley work but that does NOT make it any better.

As long as they don't dwell on it for an excessive amount of time, I'm okay with kissing in fic.

However -- there is so much awful fanart of characters kissing. Even if you don't count the ones where it looks like one or both of them have broken their necks, it's like, cool! You've capture the most awkward and least sexy moment of the kiss where someone looks like they're in pain and there is most likely the maximum amount of excess saliva involved.

The only onscreen kiss I enjoyed in recent memory was Jake and Amy's first kiss. I don't ship them or stan their relationship. I just thought it was a simple but effective scene.

I don’t mind and usually enjoy kissing scenes (except ones with excessive saliva, e.g. the infamous WR/CB one in Little Women). However, I do tend to overanalyze how realistic one is or if it’s obviously a staged kiss.

I have never particularly enjoyed actually kissing someone. I’m gonna go ahead and blame the other people for that, though.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-19 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Kissing scenes often throw me out because I start analyzing all the ways the actors aren't really kissing the way they're meant to be (like, they kiss each other at the corner of the mouth sometimes).
