That is how most people learn unusual words. How else are you going to? School (and human interaction) focuses on the main bulk that you will commonly use.

I see nothing wrong with this. It's not pathetic, in fact, it's a great way to expand your vocabulary & learn new things in general.

I don't see anything wrong with these, though I can see why you might be hesitant to mention the third one since a good chunk of people still find fanfiction to be cringe (for the record, I don't think it's cringe at all).
