I feel like, a lot of the time, female characters are held to higher standards than male ones. Goku turns Super Saiyan? No one bats an eye. Korra turns Super Saiyan? MARY SUE. MARY SUE. MARY SUE.

I realize this also depends on the author and the characters circumstances, of course. There are some who can't write women to save their lives.

If we're talking about fanfic, I feel like most of the time it is done as a form of escapism. You want to lay out some feelings so you end up projecting those feelings onto the character you're writting. I personally have become more lenient to this stuff since it's just a way for people to let out their creativity. (And I used to have a huge stick up my ass before I stepped back and realized it's ok to have fun writting fic and self indulging. You do your own fun and etc).

Well of course. Korra turning Super Saiyan doesn't even mesh with canon. She's not even Saiyan!

Yeah, Cabba turning Super Saiyan was cool, but Kale and Caulifla wasn't. To be fair, Cabba turning Super Saiyan was kind of a cool moment, but Kale and Caulifla didn't really get that cool moment. Then again, neither did Trunks or Goten but I don't remember people complaining about them.

Yeah, Goten and Trunks Super Saiyan moment was so casual with their families reactions being "Since when are you a super saiyan??". I'm not well versed in Super outside the movies to comment on it but I'll take your word for it.
