Why are people even taking this seriously

Because, in another life, they were dragged, thrashing, from a lake by some guy called Randy. Randy wears a bad and slightly inappropriate baseball cap that suggests in neat embroidery that women want him, while fish fear him, despite being there with his son (probably nicknamed 'Sport'). They bonded over the experience of wrestling them from the water and then took them home for dinner.
