so the fact that a trans queen is in the top 4 right now doesn't matter, does it?

No? It's no fucking secret that RuPaul has been openly transphobic for fucking decades. Putting a trans queen on now (or trans queens that havent transitioned on) isn't progressive or 'im sorry' as you think it is?

I know the show isn't for everyone and most ppl can't make it through it, but I at least appreciate that Dragula is open to all genders/all drag types--including Drag Kings.

Drag Race is incredibly cisnormative and besides a couple Queens who attempt to push the boundaries now and again, has actively done a lot to fuck up the drag community (while also doing a lot to help as well--but I'd say that was more the queens on the show than Ru themselves).

Drag can and should be allowed to be ugly and weird as well as polished and fishy and everything in between. Drag Race doesn't make room for the latter and RuPaul is the main reason for that.

This, good lord. The heavy, heavy, heavy emphasis on pageant/ballroom/fish drag is so tiring, when there's so much more out there? Genderfuck is nonexistent to Drag Race, all of the weird intersections of gender performance are just... not there. And that bums me out, because I love drag, I frequent clubs and even perform myself sometimes, and it's messy and fun and trashy and beautiful. I just don't see that on RPDR. And it is bc RuPaul is a deeply binary thinker. There is no grey area in RuPaul's drag. It's either "out of drag = man" or "in drag = woman". Which is fine, but... to enforce that so insidiously is terrible.

I wish there was a happy medium in between Dragula and Drag Race. I'd never want Dragula to compromise in the weird-mind fuck that it is, but I get that the body mod/body horror stuff they do (the puking, the bugs, blood, self harm etc) can be too much for a lot of people. I fully support that sort of art and I love what they do, which is why I don't want them to change.

HOWEVER.

I wish there was a show that had the gender fuckery/mess etc without the horror/goth element? Only cause it would be more mainstream--I know ppl who would be open to the genderfuck but puke etc freaks them out. And there are artists that are a happy medium that haven't found a home to be showcased, yet.

Maybe a show that focuses on a local drag place that does shows and the different sort of queens/kings/etc that come through.

I do think We're Here showed different types of drag even if the drag queens running the show were more 'conventional' -- the way they made up their focus each show was different and allowed them to do lots of gender fuckery (thinking of the Native American espiode esp where they talked about two-spirit ppl)
