102 - I love Turnbull too. (Also: I started watching this show right around the winter olympics and totally fell in love with Curling.)

123 - lame.

135 - ILU Corner Gas.

149 - I've always wondered why people will always cry that it's just a stupid [type of fictional media] when it's something I care about, but Babe and Bambi are so 'meaningful.' Animals aren't humans, ants don't have discos in their mounds, penguins don't have FM radio or a religion, and mice don't use birds as airplanes. Even if you loved That-One-Cartoon-About-The-Toaster (that I can't remember) it's still just a lamp, it has no feelings. ["Nothing against OP," she typed, annoyed with PETA for targeting her beloved Life-Sciences department, and her 'vegetarian' friend for falling off the face of the Earth.]

161 - And that doesn't apply to the rest of anime, western animation, comic books, movie stars, pop stars, most sitcoms, many novels, all romcoms and Torchwood how exactly? Heck, I know I stuck with BSG as long as I did (and oh Lord help me but I'm about to fall back in) because Lt. Gaeta is so cute. [also, dude! That art is frightening. Their noses haunt my retinas, but I dig the eyebrows and the star-spangled dunce cap.]

You're seriously comparing non-human animals to toasters? >_> You do know that humans are animals too right?

What does having FM radios, or religion, or disco have anything to do with being respectful to other animals. Hell, birds can fly, does the fact that you can't fly by your own power mean you are insignificant and not worthy of compassion? It's about as relevant. Just as humans have different culture, animals have their own cultures as well, even if we do not understand them. So they aren't entirely like us, obviously fiction uses anthropomorphism, but that doesn't mean they aren't aware.

But regardless, compassion should be based on the ability to suffer, which they are capable of as much as any human.

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying that, I'm saying the representation of animals as furry little people is just as fictitious as other cartoons and kids shows, but is always taken more seriously. (And I don't believe animals have souls(religious thing) so I don't see them as people too. I think cruelty to animals is wrong because it means the person inflicting enjoys inflicting pain (at some level, or they would have found a way around it) and that that is wrong. (Heh, I had this same line of thinking with BSG and Athena...)

I'm not arguing animal rights, I'm arguing how people see animal represented in fiction. Like people still see hunting deer as wrong because of Bambi's mom, but right now there's so many deer my grandma can't plant flowers without them getting eaten. People don't look at reality, they look at the cartoons, and with anything else that would be considered crazy.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to look at reality, maybe consider that those deer need to eat something and can't exactly go to the grocery store and buy food. Implying that it's ok to shoot them because they ate some flowers that have no real use other than looking nice in your grandma's garden is absurd. I'm not saying that animals are exactly as they are depicted in fiction, but perhaps, in some ways, it is not far from the truth. Humans are animals, and everything that humans can do has been observed to at least some degree in other animals. Elephants, for example, have traditions, culture and rituals. Pigs, for another example, are incredibly intelligent and even enjoy playing video games. So certainly they aren't going to act as they do in exaggerated childrens movies, but they are undoubtedly just as alive and vibrant and full of personality as we are (which is observable whether you think they have a soul or not). They love, they form friendships, they have interests and can even form grudges. If we can't understand them (and surely it is more difficult because we do not speak the same language nor have the same customs), then maybe that's our problem, not theirs.

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! Again I am misunderstood! I did not mean to imply you should shoot deer for eating my grandmother's flowers, I meant to imply they are practically common pests, like mice. [Except you can eat them! Which makes it even sillier that there are so many, shouldn't we be using this natural resource? Arn't there hungry people around? Mightn't these hungry people like some fresh venison more then the cans of creamed corn or fruit salad food drives normal collect? Anywhoo...]

And yes, we are animals [we sure as heck ain't plants, fungi, viruses, bacteria or archae!]. One of my friends briefly had a fling with vegetarianism because she 'realized' that pig meat was so similar to 'long pig.' I was like, "duh." We all evolved together out of the muck, but due so *something* humans have more. [A soul, sentience, sapience, whatever you define that makes a person a person, however you define a person.] And when animals are often portrayed as having this *something* it blurs the line, especially when people quit seeing it as fiction.

That and I object to the blatant emotional manipulation when it's actually used like a tool. Like sea-kittens. Ho man, have you seen that shit?

[You win, I flounce. Eventually you run into a wall of either "But I just know my doggie loves me, she doesn't just see me as a source for food" or "Grr, only people are people, how can you be so silly?" And I feel a little to close to the second option to keep posting and wank up my fav community. :)]
