164. I can understand why he's hated -- it's because he seems whiny, "emo," immature, etc. And apparently, a lot of people don't like that -- I suspect it's because Shinji reminds people too much of themselves.

You know what I've noticed? Most times people that defend Shinji say that he is, in fact, a "strong" character, implying that he does have a side to him that isn't completely spineless. Which ... is certainly true, in some respects. The main reason I like him, though, is because he's real. He shows how any 14-year-old would act when placed in his situation. Here's where I can't understand the hate -- you can't expect a 14-year-old to pull an Amuro Ray and start piloting a mecha somewhat skillfully while being ~*~*~badass~*~*~. There's going to be self-doubt, there's going to be self-pity, there's going to be "emo" and spinelessness. And yet, realistically, he'll still keep at it, putting everything he has into it, and probably realizing he has more to give than he ever thought before. What I like about Evangelion is that, even though the plot and situations are surreal and unrealistic, the characters themselves aren't. Seeing someone like Shinji -- honest, realistic, etc. -- is a breath of fresh air in a medium saturated and stifled by Kaminas and Alucards and other one-dimensional "badasses" who do "cool" things. That's why I'll always like Shinji, and say fuck the haters.

138. That does sound like a good idea. Just make sure your characters don't get reduced to stereotypes, though. :-)

How do you think Asuka fits in there? Because she tries to pilot and be a badass, but deep down inside, she's really a scared little girl.

I probably should have qualified what I said by saying that different people have different coping mechanisms and ways of dealing with stress/crappy situations; not all 14-year-old would act the way Shinji does, I'd assume.

Asuka sounds like the kind of 14-year-old who wants to be badass, so she pretends she is because she's trying to protect herself and she doesn't want to confront who she really is. There's a lot of people I know IRL who have carefully crafted facades that hide their vulnerabilities, so it's not entirely implausible (of course, most people I know are around 17-25 years old, but I can't imagine 14-year-olds not being able to do this too). When faced with the situations she's in, she believes herself to be strong -- she wants to be strong very badly -- because if she doesn't she feels she wouldn't be able to do what she has to otherwise. I think what Asuka represents is what an Amuro-like character would really be like -- merely pretending to be badass and whatnot, but ultimately just as frightened and filled with self-doubt and -pity as Shinji is. (I hope this all makes sense -- I haven't been particularly in the best frame of mind lately.)

No, no, it makes perfect sense to me. I was just interested in hearing your opinion on her. I've done some looking at her character myself, just because she happens to be one of my favorites from the show.

Thanks for asking! :-) Personally, I don't like Asuka all that much, because A.) I don't like characters who are out-and-out jerks, even if I sympathize with why they are that way (i.e. Asuka's story), and B.) I know way too many people who are like that IRL.

Then again, I like Shinji even when others hate his guts. Maybe this makes me a bit of hypocrite, I don't know. XD

so much agreement. I felt for Shinji a lot during the show - everybody experiences those feelings of self-pity and helplessness. If you don't like him, cool, I can understand why, but you can't say that he was a wuss for not dealing with all the shit thrown at him like your typical hot-blooded shonen guy.

Even Amuro Ray had an emo streak.

Oh, of course -- just not as big as Shinji's. ;-)
