164. Every time I see a secret wondering why and NGE character is disliked, I facepalm. Almost all NGE characters are explicitly designed to be unlikeable.

PS. Shinji is a self-centered asshole whole would rather whine about his daddy issues than do anything productive to save thousands of lives.

Nope! I mean, I understand being hesitant to take the reins of a giant robot. I can understand not wanting that sort of responsibility, or not being badass, etc. In fact, I expected to like Shinji going into the series, because I really like those sorts of characters! But when the very first thing he says when dad shows up and says "Here's a giant robot, go save the city" is "WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME BAWWW", there flew any chance of me ever being sympathetic for him, right out the fucking window. If he had whined in some manner that actually related to the fact that his dad had just told him to pilot a giant robot that he'd never even seen before, it would have been one thing, and I could have gotten behind that 100%. But no, all he cared about were his daddy issues.

Re: 164

I watched the series very recently, and re-watched the first episode a couple of weeks ago, and as I recalled, Shinji's issues resulted from the entire situation. He was being asked to risk his life at the behest of someone who had abandoned him, and that was a lot to digest. Please remember, when he realized that if he didn't, Rei, who was at the time, injured, would have to, he willingly piloted Unit 01. I can't see anyone realistically doing better, or having the courage to do better. Not at 14. Not in a new environment, and not having to deal with those issues at the same time. Shinji was not exclusively upset about Gendo, Shinji was panicking due to the situation, which is completely understandable.

Great, so he's a realistic fourteen-year-old self-centered asshole. Fantastic. I don't care. He still showed off where his priorities were pretty blatantly: Own issues first, everybody else second. He didn't even ask a single question about the giant robot, or the attacks, or why him, or ANYTHING until after Gendo had already shot down his daddy issue whining. His own personal drama was just that much more important to him than the issue at hand.

LOL, all fourteen-year-olds are self-centered. ALL OF THEM.

An especially self-centered one then, if you must be pedantic.

Re: 164

(Anonymous) 2009-01-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It is best we agree to disagree, in this case. I see Shinji as one of the greatest fictional characters I've seen, and he helped to pull me from depression, and I honestly do disagree. It was a complex situation, and Shinji was not sure what to do. I understand that. But you disagree, and that's fine.

I consider your icon to be very ironic. I adore Simon, and Gurren Lagann but I've always seen him as somewhat similar to Shinji, in many ways, although their basic personalities differ. Simon was certainly luckier than Shinji in some ways.

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
He is similar to Shinji, and he falls into the category of characters that I really like, which I was expecting Shinji to also fall into. Shinji did not.

You seem to be under the impression that I'm criticizing Shinji for his lack of ability, or strong decision-making skills or something. I'm not. What I'm saying is that when told by his dad to go save thousands of lives, he didn't even acknowledge it, and went straight to his own issues, which was a fantastic display of self-centered assholery. If you see it some other way then that's great, but I get the feeling that you aren't really reading what I'm saying.

Re: 164

[identity profile] ryanitenebrae.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I am shedding the Anon now.

Yes. I understand what you are saying. I have discussed that episode, and I have discussed how it, in my opinion, neither shows Shinji to be unsympathetic, not precludes liking him later in the show. What do you expect him to do? He had no idea what was going on. I'm sorry, but in a situation such as this, what he said is perfectly understandable. When he began to understand the situation, he willingly piloted the EVA. He was not forced.

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-31 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure why you bothered with it in the first place.

I expected him to frame his whining in the context of what was actually happening, because what was happening was clearly important. That's all I would have asked for. Instread he jsut ignored that context and, in my opinion, treated it like it wasn't important.

And as for not being forced...he more or less was. I mean, Gendo paraded Rei out in front of him in a spectacularly manipulative move to basically Kick the Dog and guilt-trip him into it. Just because I think he's a self-centered asshole doesn't mean I also think that he's an amoral monster.

Re: 164

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-31 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Fourteen-year-olds don't have the brain functions to be altruistic unless they're very, very exceptional. They are all but programmed to be self-centered.
pikabot: (Louie)

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. I mean yes they do tend to be self-centered but there's varying degrees of that.
karel: (2-D; cowboy up)

Re: 164

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-31 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Considering his really shitty childhood, I would honestly say that Shinji is probably lacking in some of the essential coping mechanisms that he should have by his age (these mechanisms must be taught, unless the child is, again, exceptional), and therefore quite developmentally delayed. This doesn't excuse his behavior (and I hate applying psychology to fictional characters anyway -- it never seems to work out quite right), but it explains it very well. Kids brains aren't fully developed and they're not actually normally capable of making truly rational decisions all the time until they're about 21-24. It takes longer in the case of developmental delay.

Having a man that's (and I could be wrong here -- I haven't watched more than a few episodes of EVA) shunned him/been absent from his entire life suddenly demand things of him doesn't help either.
pikabot: (Frostbite)

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-31 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's...nice? It doesn't make him any less of a self-centered asshole. He's a victim of his own circumstances etc but frankly after that, I really could not bring myself to care about any of his drama.
karel: (charlie; aw hell no)

Re: 164

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-31 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
You can't really call him a self-centered asshole when he's incapable of doing otherwise. Well. I mean, you can, but it's the same as calling a mentally ill person an asshole for going off on you in a manic state. It's beyond their control.
pikabot: (hermes oh shit)

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-31 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
By the age of fourteen one's decision-making capabilities are sufficiently developed that they can be held accountable for their behavior, and his behavior in this regard was, in my opinion, well above and beyond what can be excused by his age and mental state.
karel: (karelrutger; er whut)

Re: 164

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on the kid, really. Legal field says yes, psychology says no, so I think we're at an impasse here.
pikabot: (classy lady)

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-31 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt you'll find a reliable psychologist who'll say that teenagers are entirely incapable of being held accountable for their behavior. Just because their decision-making skills are not yet fully developed does not mean that they're socially inept by default.
karel: (ed; everything is going to hell)

Re: 164

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-31 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not entirely incapable -- of course not. But throw one into a stunning, possibly traumatic situation with someone that they've never had a good relationship with, and then on top of that tell them "Okay, now, I want you to pilot this giant robot against this other giant robot," and you're going to have a kid that's freaking out severely and not making the most rational decisions.

(But why am I defending this kid? I don't actually like him.)
pikabot: (Helen)

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-31 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but irrational decisions aren't my problem with him. It's the way he completely ignored the fact that there was a decision to be made, and went right to whining about how Gendo had abandoned him. He didn't say a work about the giant robot, or the Angel, or anything, until afterwards.
karel: (migueltulio; two men in a boat)

Re: 164

[personal profile] karel 2009-01-31 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, see, I can't really comment on that because it's been a hella long time since I've seen the first few episodes and don't remember the specifics of that. I just remember Rei being carted out and his agreeing after that.
pikabot: (Dunning Smith)

Re: 164

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-31 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, here's how it went, pretty much word for word:

Gendo: I want you to pilot a giant robot and save the world.
Shinji: BAWWWWW WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME
Gendo: I don't have time for this. Either get in the damn robot or go home.
