130. Heh. The timing on this is funny to me, because I knew almost nothing about the vocaloids less than a week ago (other than "there's this song synthesizer software, and it's somehow also this green-haired girl, and for some reason she really likes leeks."). I was kind of befuddled by what few videos I'd seen, and I didn't know about the rest of the vocaloids at all.

So if you'd made this secret a week ago, I'd have skipped it, because I wouldn't have even really known what you were talking about.

So then, I'm searching on Youtube for anime parody videos (since some of them are hilarious, okay) and I find this Hetalia parody of something called "Alice Human Sacrifice." And my eyebrows shoot to the top of my head, because "Alice Human Sacrifice" WTF!?! So I read the comments and find out that it's a parody of a vocaloid video.

So I search for the original and find 6 different versions of it. Each one creepier and bloodier and all around awesomer than the last. All with slightly different narrative stories and different artwork.

So then I start looking for other videos. And I find the "Daughter of Evil" videos (3 different main stories! Plus 2 offshoots from different viewpoints!). Then I find the "Kokoro Kiseki" video about the scientist who creates the girl without the heart, and the reply from the robot's point of view. And the mix of both viewpoints. And then I find "Deep Woods Circus." And "Revolution." And "World is Mine," and...

And then I come up for air after 4 days of surfing through youtube with nearly every minute of free computer time, and have 30+ links in my new "vocaloid" bookmark folder. And by this point I get the appeal.

I don't necessarily love it for the music (though some of the songs are pretty good, and I love some of the covers with actual singers). I totally get any criticism to the phenomenon based on tinny robotic voices. I still don't really get the sillier videos with the leeks and the repetition and no sort of storyline or narrative. Some of them are cute, but eh.

But I LOVE the stories. And I love the glimpse I'm getting of the fan culture, where apparently someone produces a song with the vocaloid programs, and another fan does a video, and then another fan does a song with an alternate viewpoint, or a sequel/prequel. Then someone does a cover of the song, or a mix. And the artwork is usually actually PRETTY GOOD. Even beautiful, sometimes. It's just fascinating.

Plus I'm a sucker for melodrama, which some of the stories are in spades.

So, yeah, I understand why you think it's all crap. But at the same time, man, if you haven't seen some of the storyline videos, you're missing out. If you have, and you still don't like them, then to each their own, everyone has their own tastes, yada yada.

(If you are interested, though, go here (http://www.metafilter.com/78664/Vocaloid-Storytime). In the interests of full disclosure, that's my post. This what happens when you have 30 links on one subject and have just signed up with Metafilter a couple of weeks ago. It seemed like a good idea at the time.)

tl;dr I know.

Duuuude yes! I totally agree, the best thing about Vocaloid is it inspires a lot of people to make music, and music with STORIES. And of course there's groups like Supercell and such where the music really sounds great too!

I'll have to check out a few of those I haven't seen!

Though actually, "Kokoro" was originally from Rin's point of view, the scientist and Len versions were created later.

Yep! I just...I haven't really gotten over the buzz from finding a brand new shiny fandom, you know? And the fan scene sounds complicated enough that someone could really do an awesome academic paper on all of it.

Cool. Have you seen the prequel to "Dead Woods Circus"? I found it late and linked it in the comments, and it's creepy and really worth checking out. Also, if you know of any good ones that aren't in the post or the comments, and that have a storyline (and are translated in some way, either subbed in English or have some sort of translation I can read), please link them? I'm new to this, and I'd love to see them.

Yeah, I know..I read it in some of the Youtube comments, and the mix video is the other way around, too. I put them in that order since that's the order I initially viewed them in, so they make more sense to me when viewed in that order. (Though that might've been different if I'd viewed them the other way around to start with, I dunno.)

Haha, yeah there's a LOT of memes and such I just plain don't bother with, but looking for new songs and stuff is fun! And now that Luka has come out, there's even more fun! (lot's of fanart of the other vocaloids welcoming her too! so adorable.)

I have not! Some of the more "darker" ones I have yet to watch. I really like Daughter of Evil, though the Dark Woods Circus didn't quite stick with me.

I'll look through the comments then. There's one or two silly ones I've stumbled upon recently. Really I'd suggest ANYTHING by Supercell... "Love is War" is super cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdwUgNyWRZY (the one I faved isn't translated but I'm sure there's many out there) also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUfffElCDqM which is very sweet.

I wish I could find a translation of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEUX_lpAF64

However, i think these two fit your bill!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51r4WfOHic4 (translation in comments)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cHsNnDfmDs (okay so this is a bit silly..but it's got a sweet PV!)

And yeah, that makes sense. I liked the order I viewed them too XD Cus having the scientist seem kind of tragic and mysterious was cool. Since I think the song was meant to be more bittersweet..maybe?

Yep! I am really interested to see what everyone does with Luka.

Oh, awesome! Haven't done it yet, but I will DEFINITELY be checking your recommendations out. Thank you!

Also, re: Dark Woods Circus...I didn't really like it much at first either. Kind of has the subtlety of sledgehammer, you know? Then someone posted a comment that they really loved that one, and I went back and watched it again...and still not my favorite, but I guess I can see the appeal more?

But I really like the prequel. It's set in a mental institution. And has chibi!Miku being all dreamy and unfocused, and the song is all dreamy and unfocused and she's singing about how white and clean the walls are, and there are horrible things happening. And...I dunno. I'm spoiling it, so I'll just give you the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXTwk0NW-tA (unfortunately not subbed, but translation is in the sidebar).

130 op
god, thanks for the novel. lol

the characters are kind of cute, and it's actually mostly the robotic voices that are really bothersome. I like 'Melt' and 'Human Alice Sacrifice'.. just the normal sounding versions, not the robot ones. :/

Different tastes I guess? I love the idea of advancing voice technology, so it's fun to hear how well people can use them and stuff.

And I guess after so many songs Miku's voice just feels normal XD

Re: 130.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-31 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, sorry. I'm kind of in the honeymoon phase of fan discovery where everything is beautiful omg, so I'm rambly.

Yeah, I totally understand that. Sort of a pet peeve? Kind of like I don't really like non-story videos usually (I don't like Caramelldansen much either)...I can see the appeal if I squint and look sideways, but otherwise just not clicking. And you're the same with the voices?

The world would be boring if everyone liked the same thing, I guess.

Though, if you are looking for vocaloid videos with normal singers, and can sit through one vocaloid voice video just so you know WTF is going on, I can rec the "Daughter of Evil" series? First one is a vocaloid singer, then the next two in the Metafilter post above are sung by human singers. Must have a HIGH melodrama threshold, though, because it rivals Rose of Versailles and Brother Dear Brother in terms of sparkly Shoujo Drama. If that isn't your cuppa, ignore this.
