ARRGH, that is *so* annoying.
It's one thing to have ideas/feedback about plot elements because they don't work or you somehow missed a step or something.

It's entirely another to say the story doesn't work because it doesn't conform to 'your' idea of 'how it should be'.

Ignore them, OP! Roll with your story, tell it your way, don't doubt yourself! I'm sure your ideas and plot arc was just fine. Sounds like they wanted to get you to write just for them, and that is really not on.
