That's a good thing! Anakin's slow descent from a well-meaning child to a confused and hurt adult to Darth Vader is meant to be a tragedy, and it doesn't work so well if Anakin isn't sympathetic.

I haven't watched the prequel trilogy since the movies first came out, it's easier for me to reconcile the two portrayals.
