I have to ask, are you really as old as your profile says you are?

Look, my internet immaturity aside -- and, really, why would my response to your submission prompt you to check out my user profile? I mean, really? -- this is fandom secrets. It's not "General Thoughts and Random Opining," so when you use the term "name" in context of fandom, the implication can be that you're presenting yourself as "a name" or an important presence in your fandom which means something in fandom context. You worded it the way you did, and I responded accordingly. Remember, as readers, all we have to go by is the few words a poster uses on their secret. Implied subtext is an inappropriate expectation in this context. You said that "your name" is the only thing keeping others from leaping at your throat, as opposed to, oh, I dunno, "the 'relationships' I've forged online" or whatever.

So, yes, I'm as old as my profile says, but you bringing my age up is, IMO, an attempt to deflect that I called your secret out as either 1) pretentious and twatty or 2) poorly worded, and neither of those have anything to do with how I read or how old I am.

It's Fandom!Secrets. We're not obligated to think your submission is clever or funny or insightful.

ETA: OP, I apologize for being twatty. I popped off a snarky comment when slightly buzzed on cough syrup w/ codeine -- I've got a shitty cold (not that that's an excuse for behaving badly, but it definitely affected my impulse control). On reflection, I see your point and I responded in a really uncool manner. I'm not saying that I still can't see my interpretation of your secret as valid, but, whoa, I behaved like a complete asshole. I hope you will accept my apology. *extends olive branch*

I think the reason I reacted to your particular secret is that I've been in Harry Potter fandom for a long time (don't know what fandom(s) you're in, obviously) and for years I've rolled my eyes at people who make coy posts about their status in fandom ("People say I'm a BNF! Who me? Innocent little 'ol moi? Surely not!" when you know they're totally all over the idea) and I think this prejudice on my part caused me to misinterpret your secret. Anyhow, I'm not deleting my original replies, because, dude, I gotta own my assholishness, yes? I will change my icon, though . . .

Alright there, settle down now. I don't think it's unreasonable to try to get a sense of who you're talking to when you're having a conversation, especially when you don't have the luxury of seeing the other person's face or reading their body language. I didn't make it a special case for you, so don't worry.

As to the age question, I think you know exactly what I meant. You've just confirmed some very bleak suspicions I've had for some time about certain members of fandom.

I hope you will go back and read the ETA I edited into my previous reply -- again, I do apologize.
