120- I wouldn't go that far, but I think a not-insignificant percentage of the girls online who say they're asexual or lesbian are actually teenage girls who are grossed out by penises and men in general. There's a reason young girls are more attracted to the pretty boys, you know.

But then, I just say that from my own experience, since I didn't start really loving cock til I was well into my twenties. Tolerated it, but didn't love it, and really thought it would be awesome just to have a relationship in which I didn't have to deal with it... ie, with a girl.

But I could be a total anomaly for all I know.

... What the hell, do you really need to be told that your experience is probably not going to sync up with everyone else's?

Re: 120

(Anonymous) 2009-01-31 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. I don't. Re-read the post, and you'll see that I've said as much already.

Re: 120

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw that, which made it all the more confusin that your opening statement is generalizing your experience to other girls on the internet.

Which is... really, I'm sorry, but I don't think your experience is very common.

Re: 120

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's not, actually. What I'm saying is that I think that this might be true for a certain percentage of young girls, given my own experience, as well as the tendency that I've noticed for teenage heterosexual girls to crush on boys with a prettier/feminine/less threatening appearance, and to move on to liking more masculine faces as they get older.

When I say a "not-insignificant percentage", I don't mean all. I don't mean a majority. I don't mean half. I don't even mean a third. :) I just mean a not-insignificant percentage (like, 1 to 10% maybe, rather than an insignificant percentage like .005%). And I say that I think this, not that I know this. And I also say that I could be completely wrong in thinking that there's even that percentage, and that my experience could be completely unique to me.

And you're entitled to think that my experience is quite uncommon. I'm open to the idea that it's quite uncommon. *shrugs* But I think the labels we ascribe to ourselves when we're young aren't always the labels we ascribe to ourselves when we're older. Once again, I could be the only person in the entire world who changed her conception of her own sexuality as she aged. I'm cool with that, if it's true. I kind of doubt that it is, though.

Not insignifcant means a significant percentage. I agree that the labels we ascribe to ourselves when we're young don't always stick and I'm sure you're not the only person who has changed the conception of your sexuality - but to posit that women like "prettyboys" because they find men threatening and are questioning without any kind of substanting evidence is kind of outrageous.

I just really don't think that interest in prettyboys indicates some pathological distrust of men, and even if it does, shouldn't that take a backseat to plain old interests in aesthetics? That whole statement also plays into really conventional ideas of men and women, too, hence my pretty violent reaction to it.

Re: 120

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well... for one thing, I didn't say women liked pretty boys for those reasons, I said that I think some teenage girls might. It's just casual speculation, not a comprehensive scientific study. Also, it seems like you're perceiving an all-or-nothing, declarative tone that I don't think is present in my posts.

What it comes down to, I guess, is that I'm not gonna do a couple hours of literature search to see if my idle spec is backed up by dozens of reputable psychological studies. You're welcome to do that, if you like. Again, though, I'd look for at least twenty or thirty when and if you do because, at least in the biomedical sciences, you can usually find a paper saying anything you want. It's important to get a broad range of scientific opinion on any topic before coming to any solid theory, much less one that you'd want to state as fact in an argument.

The mouse is hardly the first person to posit that many young girls are attracted to non-threatening, not too 'masculine' men, though. Disney and the pop music industry have been playing on this idea for decades.

The plural of "anecdote" is not "data," kthxbye.

Re: 120

For the record, I agree with you. Well, I've never quiet come to the point where I'm really into sex anyway. I know I'm not asexual, but sex and penises and all just isn't really high on my priority list at the moment.

It might not be the most common thing ever, but it doesn't make you a freak, and it doesn't make that inaccurate at all.

Sorry for being anon, but when paperclipchains fixes her wanky little talons into anything, I find it's better just so I don't have to deal with her witchy ways.

Thanks. :) I'm pretty sure it doesn't happen often, but being someone it happened to, I can't rule out that it's something that is a part of a couple other people's sexual development as well. :) Glad to hear I'm not the only one. :)

Re: 120

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's totally in my nature to abstain from going after anons.

Re: 120

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Anon-ing here to say that this isn't the most far-fetched idea I've ever heard. I think both genders find the other one really weird sometimes, and if you're straight or bi, the point at which you go "omg other gender is hawt!" and the point at which you are really into the details of actual sex don't necessarily sync up. (Lots of girls crush on boy bands and aren't ready for sex, for example.)

Anecdote =/= data, so I dunno. But I think it may be true for some people.

(Meanwhile, I'm bi, and find myself attracted to girly women, masculine women, manly men, bishie men, and androgynous people, depending what day of the week it is. IT GETS CONFUSING INSIDE MY HEAD but I wouldn't have it any other way. :D)
