Ahh, how hard it was to not just use the RP account for this...

Anyway! I know how you feel, anon, to the point where I wonder if some people will suspect I'm you. (Or maybe I'm just full of myself.) But I do also feel obligated to note that the fandom does also do really neat stuff sometimes, and more importantly that there are assuredly good sane non-creepy fans/fanmaterials out there, even if you maybe have to look a little harder. It's certainly a culture shock though, and I'm not sure it's always worth the pedos. ...And lord god, it's hard to escape fanon.

But there's nothing that's not awesome about little girls in frilly dresses wielding massive destructive power at each other and then having tea, and that's the important thing.

Also makes a nice contrast with that one secret a few days back, doesn't it?

Then again they seemed to think the little girls in frilly dresses massive power etc. was a bad thing. Maybe there is a fundamental divide after all.

Touhou fandom is by far the best fandom I've walked upon, seriously. Minimal wank for a hueg but yet obscure (I still find people saying "what's Touhou") fandom. The latest one's probably over Maikaze's fanime.

From my observation, Touhou's popular and gets awesome because the concept is likable. Everyone knows his art sucks, but it's the concept that counts, and sometimes the music makes up for it.

And trying to stay away from fanon in Touhou is just impossible! We'll get a normal game without anything to add. My favourite fanon so far is "Third bosses are never serious".

Meiling loves humans and she's better at melee, Alice only used her left hand and she didn't use her grimore, Keine couldn't transform into EX-Keine, Nitori's shy but loves human, and Yuugi? not even drop She loves parties and attacks you just for barging in, and she was trying to fight without dropping her sake.

Enh, I dunno. All fandoms have baggage, but sometimes I definitely think I'd take a more standard version over Touhou's. When this fandom gets creepy it gets freaking creepy. It's true that it'd be worse with shipwars, though.

Fanon just gets to be a pain in the ass when it's genuinely difficult to tell figure out what's canon. (Sob sob, why does the wiki list Shanghai and Hourai as characters, it's not my fault that I was fooled for so long.) The fandom seems like it has an unusual attitude on canon vs fanon from what I've seen; canon isn't respected very highly (it gets such low priority for translation, sigh) and the issue just gets confused a lot.

...Also, man, it's Touhou. Nobody fights at their full strength, except maybe Marisa sometimes. Combat sport solves everything! Even when that makes no sense!

It's true that I stay away from loli in fandom, though. They still scare me.

And when you get canon, it's usually just frameworks and sometimes ZUN snags memes and turn them to canon. Headbutt Keine, anyone? Touhou is the only fandom where fanon is more important than fanon. Sigh.

... true dat. Love-Powered, seriously? I know Master Spark isn't powered by love, but rather it's the annihilation of love, but love-powered still sounds silly.

Ngh, the loli. It gets so easy to forget that the actual canon is pretty much completely chaste. Not even fanservice. But that's just the internet being the internet, I guess.

Well, I tend to be something of a canonwhore personally. Plus I RP, so I have a practical need to know canon. And it's not like Touhou makes a lot of sense to begin with, it runs on Touhou Logic (which is admittedly whimsically charming). It can get a bit maddening, but hey, I'm insane to begin with.

As for the love of Master Spark, well, it could always go like in 8-Bit Theatre (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=041127) I guess!

Here's someone who gets it, finally. Except that beautiful tame fanwork isn't even that hard to find. I mean, just browse Gensokyo.org's doujin archive. Hell, even the board (which is obviously the only experience the OP had of the fandom) has constructive/interesting threads on its good days.

Well, I can't blame anyone for not wanting to wade through the board for its good-days stuff, but imageboards have never been my cup of tea. I'm growing in need of a break from it myself, and I don't even try to participate, just check it for weird pictures to alarm my friends with. But man, you're right about the big freaking doujin archive. Really, even with the stuff that doesn't appeal to me at all, nobody can deny that this fandom puts a lot of time and effort and talent into its material. Some of it's just staggering. (Even if it'd be nice to have a little more focus on translating canon materials...)

One could definitely wish for an LJ presence, though. But comms have been attempted and died out as I understand, so maybe there's just plain not enough interest. Community-wise, it's mainly shrinemaiden, isn't it? Which is a mixed bag, but that's because all fandoms are.

Of course, for me I've never been one to get hugely involved in fandom to begin with. Though I always like watching them; I'm kind of a fan of fandom. Maybe the best survival tip is just being happy with a few friends to chat about the franchise with.

Hehe, well, alts would be telling. On my end it's mainly the two of us, and someone we've got continually tempted to RP Touhou but who's still terrified that she'll never know the canon well enough.

...And now that temptation to use this RP account has gone through, I'm never going to be un-lazy enough to switch back, am I. Alas.

Hah! Touhou is arguably the most relaxed fandom ever regarding canon. Even wildly OOC swervs created entertaining stuff like Winter Scenery's junkie!Hina. Tell her that if she can channel the character well enough there's nothing to be afraid of.

Yeah, but it's true there's a surprising amount of lore to it. Not to mention all the traditional Japanese culture and folklore elements, which might as well be a whole nother canon sometimes. That was one of the things that made me leery about trying to play from Touhou too at first. In practice, though, it really doesn't come up as much as you'd think, depending on the character. Gensokyo has a lot of inhabitants who don't give a damn about understanding the place themselves!
