Just because someone needs to be saved or protected sometimes, they are not weak. Orihime may be arguable because her massive amounts of self-doubt make her easily vulnerable, but she also considers herself weak for it and wants to overcome it.
Bleach has one of the most diverse and impressive female cast I have seen in a manga in years. Not every woman needs to be a kickass killer machine.

But let's not forget what Orihime thought of pulling at one point: thwart Aizen's plans herself by undoing the Hougyoku with her power. This without counting the fact she could've left Loly and Menoly to just rot and die, but she revives them despite the abuse they piled on her. Abuse that she withstood bravely and without crying, whining, or anything. If that doesn't take balls, whoops, boobs, they I honestly DON'T KNOW WHAT DOES.
And while we're on that, people sure are quick to overlook the fact Rukia's deal was more complicate than "Oh save me Ichigo". She had her issues to get over, and she withstood the burden of Kaien's death by herself for many, many years (let's not forget how old shinigami are). I can name at least one shounen hero who had to go through that, and I guess people don't harass him for it because he kicks butt in spectacular ways. Anyway, the real message Ichigo and Co. got across when they banded together to rescue her was "You're not alone in this." Plain and simple.
Gah. Don't make me repeat such obvious things ever again, fandom.
