WTF, are you like 13? Grow up and get a life outside of fandom. Maybe then you might get some common sense
Re: 166
People should be allowed to enjoy their fandom without having to take it to the streets and have it be real.
Haven't you EVER read something or liked something in a fandom that you wouldn't necessarily want to happen in the real world?
And..furthermore, things in reality have consequences.
Fandom things don't. Maybe whoever posted 166 does not think gay marriage would contribute positively to the society, but reading about gay-ness in fandom doesn't change society at all.
I'm not saying I agree with him/her, I'm just saying that fandom is for fun, and nothing more.
Re: 166
I will agree with the idea that there is a line between fiction and reality. I can write and enjoy rape in fiction, whereas I'd never condone it in real life.
That said, anyone who wants to go around whining about how I AM IN A SLASH FANDOM AND PEOPLE ARE ALL EXPECTING ME TO CARE ABOUT RL GAY STUFF is extremely naive. Fandom is self-selected, and not surprisingly, a lot of people who enjoy slash are gay/lesbian/bisexual/your mom in real life. If you came into a room full of career women, knowing that they actively enjoy their jobs, and said "hey guys, I want you to read this awesome story I wrote about how cool this working female character is -- except in real life, I really don't give a shit if you people get equal pay, lulz" --- you would have to expect them to be pissed at you. That's saying that your fiction trumps their reality, and that is seriously not cool.
If the OP wants to form his/her own group of slash fans that enjoy the 'fetish' of gay sex, they are free to do that. Just as gay fans are perfectly allowed not to interact with people who would care more about fantasy than reality. For me personally? My real life tastes can infringe upon my fictional ones, but my fictional tastes are never allowed to infringe on my reality.
Re: 166
(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)Things in reality have consequences, yes. Things in fandom do, too, because there are real people involved in fandom. If a person is hurt by something that is said online, the fact that it happened online or in fandom doesn't make it hurt any less.
Words have consequences. And telling people they don't have the right to be upset or offended just because you don't find it problematic means you are exercising privilege that the rest of us don't necessarily have. It's offensive and demeaning and it completely dehumanizes the real people in fandom for whom these issues are personal and immediate. Whether the OP supports gay marriage or not, she's still exercising her privilege by wanting to shut down discussion of the issue. And that is abhorrent behavior. (Here's (http://blog.shrub.com/archives/tekanji/2006-03-08_146) an excellent primer on Privilege and You, if you're interested- it outlines things that are applicable in any dicussion of minorities.)
Sure, fandom is for fun, but saying that it can't be anything else- sociopolitical, or a safe space for minorities, for instance- takes a rather sadly narrow view of everything that fandom is.
Re: 166
Thank you for that.
Re: 166
My main point was that I was irritated by the apathy to ACTUAL rights being denied to gay people, while the "situations" of PRETEND people might apparently garner sympathy. It creates a really unfortunate mindset, regardless of whether its discrimination about gay marriage, civil rights or any other highly charged topic.
On the other hand, I was disgusted by the ABSOLUTE obliviousness of the OP in general, and the absolutely hysterical irony of making a secret complaining about how your rights are basically being infringed on...WHILE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU DON'T CARE IF OTHER PEOPLE'S RIGHTS ARE DENIED...wtf?
