OP has a point about Blair, though. Legacy admission is pretty rampant at Yale.

True, I don't take issue with her opinion on Blair, it was that one statement that got under my skin.

Re: 129

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
We have no way of knowing if the person even goes to Yale, anyway.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it matter? For all we know, the person could go to Harvard. ;)

Re: 129

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Harvard sux :P

I haven't really followed GG in a long time, but I tend to agree with 129 that all the Yale drama really doesn't constitute a realistic concern for someone like Blair Waldorf. Rory Gilmore, I understood, but Blair?

GG references of any kind make me happy :)

Oh shit, and you know what, same initials XD

Re: 129

Yup. I noticed that back when Gossip Girl was first getting big (and I was avoiding all things involved, though now I'm considering trying at least one of the books). It annoyed me then, now I find it funny...

Re: 129

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Gilmore Girls was the better show by far anyway :(

Re: 129

This fact makes me happy...

Re: 129

[identity profile] inksplotched.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, it sounds to me like the OP doesn't, anyone who went through the application process and got into Yale (or any Ivy League) would not be so flippant.

Re: 129

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
If they have a background similar to the character's, then I can kind of see why.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2009-02-02 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm...I dunno. I personally don't go to an Ivy League, but I have a friend who goes to Harvard (Law School, but still), and she'd probably agree with that assessment. Not just about Yale, though, but about most of the Ivy Leagues.

I think that Stanford actually has the most arbitrary admissions policy (from my experience, anyway). I knew one guy who got accepted into all of the Ivy Leagues and got rejected from Stanford. The friend who goes to Harvard was accepted into all of her undergrad choices...except for Stanford. Stanford, what's wrong with you???

Re: 129

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But like I said above (and the anon poster too) it doesn't guarantee at all that a particular person will get in. I don't know the character at all, but she'd be a fool if she thought she was guaranteed because of that. There are plenty of legacies who don't get in even if they're very qualified.

Re: 129

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There is something to be said for the fact that the college plot line is constantly played up to be disproportionately dramatic, given the character's situation. Blair, if I recall, has a lot more going for her than family connections. I know a few Blair's in my life, and while it wouldn't be fair to say they never had anything to worry about, the process was by their own admission much less stressful than it was for everyone else.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. But, sometimes, when you're in one of those families with connections, there's a lot more stress on you to get into a school that has name recognition or that your parents went to, rather than one that's right for you. Obviously they're different, and maybe less pressing worries than the kids who have to wonder if schools will give them financial aid, but still, it's a type of stress.

I could be just talking out of my ass here. I've never watched GG in my life.

Re: 129

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... and I can think of quite a few people I would share my sympathy with before doling it out to the Blair's of the world. I like her best out of all the girls on that show, but boo fucking hoo, you know :)

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I wasn't saying people should sympathize with Blairs. I was saying that even for people of what I would assume is this character's high social standing, the college admissions process is generally pretty damn stressful. I don't think that having money and family connections erases all of the horrors of the process.

That I can totally believe. For some people even if the Dean himself told her she had nothing to worry aobut they freak out something will go wrong until the last minute.

Please don't remind me. I'm having PTSD just thinking about it.
