109. Agreed.

111. *groan* Did you have to pick some of the creepiest otaku photos for your secret, OP? That first one is making me shudder.

126. Okay, I'll admit it. When I saw that scene, the first thought that popped in my head was "Nice butt!" Those are some very flattering villain pants.

137. He's got the charm but his accent is all wrong. Still, with a little tweaking it would be nice.

143. UHG!!!!!! This secret pisses me off just as much as those secrets that say, "Awww, they picked another white guy."

NO, THEY DIDN'T! They hired another English guy. The vast majority of Doctors have been English. The producers DID NOT HIRE a German, a Russian, an Italian or a Swiss. In short, they did not just hire "a white" guy.

These actors have ethnic backgrounds. Honestly, they're Europeans! They are born and raised in their blood origin countries. It's not like some Americans or Canadians who have to trace their roots back to Europe. These actors are from there. So, quit calling them white. It's an insult to their countries and cultures that have been around for hundreds of years. Some even thousands.

/rant off

162. I've been saying that from the start. Now if they could get some of Buffy's witty dialog and humor then I would happily watch this show again. (I quit after last week's snoozefest.) As it stands now, it's boring as anything.

165. Well, he did break up with his girlfriend over the phone. That's not cool any way you look at it.

170. How?

177. I still miss him. But then I miss the 4th Doctor. I don't want any of them to regenerate! WAHHHH! Just clone the actors, already.

Not all English people are white.

No, all English people are white unless they are English mixed. Not all English citizens are white. There is a difference.

Just like all Polish people are white. However; not all Polish citizens are.

Re: 109 111 126 137 143 162 165 170 177

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty bullshit. If you've been living there long enough to have an english ethnicity, then you're English, regardless of skin colour.

With that sort of logic I should be able to call myself a Native American versus an American citizen since my family has been here for generations.

Re: 109 111 126 137 143 162 165 170 177

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm...noo-oo. The Native American vs. American comparison would be more Celtic/Gaelic vs. English, really. English is English is English.

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
What's your ethnic background? You are that but also a citizen of England.

Put it another way, if your family stayed the same ethnic background as you are now but lived in Japan for generations, would you call yourself Japanese? If not, how is this any different?

Re: 109 111 126 137 143 162 165 170 177

[identity profile] dancesontrains.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd call myself a British-Asian; my parents came here from India, and I was born here.

Yes, I would call myself Japanese if that was the case; I've met people who have lived in ,say, Trindad for generations and their ancestors came from parts of India or Africa, and I think they have the full right to call themselves Trini.

And there have been people of all sorts of colours living here for at least a thousand years. If they aren't British, then no one is.

Re: 109 111 126 137 143 162 165 170 177

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
And there have been people of all sorts of colours living here for at least a thousand years.

For a thousand years? Asians have been to England for a thousand years? Africans have been to England for a thousand years? North Americans have been to England for a thousand years? South Americans have been to England for a thousand years? Citation please.

Romans, Britons, Normans, Anglo-Saxons have been to England for thousands of years. Basically, Europeans. Or "white people" as some might say. If they wanted to trade, they would send out ships. If they wanted slaves, they would enslave their neighbors. It was pretty much one hue for the longest.

Trinidad isn't Japan. Trinidad is not even the native name for the Island. It comes from the Latin word for Trinity. And it's more like America than Japan in that Trinidad itself was a colony for many European countries. Japan, on the other hand, is very homogenized in its culture. You might think you are Japanese if you are there long enough. You might call yourself Japanese. But no one ethnically Japanese will call you that. You will always be the gaijin.

[identity profile] dancesontrains.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry that you missed my point. I'm sorry that you, as an American, are deciding how the ethnic backgrounds of British people should be divided. :(

And no, I can't be bothered to cite anything. Learn the history yourself; maybe then you will stop being an overgeneralising fool spewing their idiocy over the internet, but I highly doubt it.

You know, I could forgive for recycling the plots if they would only punch up the dialog.

Non-Buffy Rupert's dialog is so utterly cliche American wannabe badass that I wince whenever I hear it. No one outside of Clint Eastwood and Michael Bay movies talks like that.

143

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
How is it an insult to call them white? (I ask this as a white English person.)
ext_52635: (Default)

Re: 143

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Because white bundles up the continent as one anything goes hue.

Are you French? The French are white.
Are you Dutch? The Dutch are white.
Are you Russian? The Russian are white.

Or are you English and only English. And would rather people call you by your background versus your skin color? Your skin color is one aspect of yourself. By calling yourself English, you are making a clearer picture.

Re: 143

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Right, so that's a generalisation, but it's not insulting. I mean, broad categories of race are inadequate and problematic, but the way you're narrowing things down seems just as problematic to me. You act like 'English' is some pure ethnicity, when it's not; you do know that we've been invaded by quite a few different countries in the past, right? So that's why the people above are saying that English != white, because the only meaningful sense of the word 'English' is 'people with English citizenship' rather than 'people descended only from 100% pure English stock'. (Technically I'm something like 1/16th Irish, and I have a sprinkling of German in me as well... does that mean I no longer qualify as English?)

The Time Lord, 36, dumped the sexy actress over the phone from Los Angeles, blaming the distance between them. (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article310352.ece)

Currently he's dating the girl who played his daughter. >_>

Oh yeah, that's true! For some odd reason, I thought that the girl in that story was the Doctor's daugther. But the girl from the story was... Reinette, right?

Oh David, dating your costars. I totally want to go on the show now, so he can date me! LOL
