109. Even though I'll probably get jumped on for this, I actually agree. There's a difference between not liking and even not approving of a religion, and losing respect for a person because they practice that religion. Some of my friends think this way and have even stopped watching movies with actors and actresses that are Scientologists, even if they previously liked that person or that movie a lot. It's ridiculous.
Besides, it's not our business what they believe.

It's not our business, but sometimes we find out anyway. Like... Tom Cruise on national news.

For one, Scientology is hardly a religion, it's a moneymaking scheme Hubbard admitted he just made up to get rich. For another, the thing about religion is that usually they're a set of ideological beliefs. If you belong to that religion, it's because you subscribe to these beliefs. Why wouldn't we judge them for what they believe in and stand for? I think highly of celebs who go overseas and help starving children - that's something they stand for. I think negatively of people who buy into delusions and believe things that I strongly disagree with.

If a celebrity you liked believed that black people were actually aliens, and should be enslaved again, would that seriously not change the way you felt about them?

Touché.
I think I was reading too much into the secret - you're right, feeling differently about the person is pretty expected. However, I've always had the mindset that you can not like a celebrity as a person but still enjoy their work (though now that I think about it, that wasn't what the OP was getting at anyways).

Ah, now that I definitely agree with! I still love Jerry Maguire and A Few Good Men just as much, haha. :P

You can still enjoy the work of someone you don't like as a person, but then there's the issue of giving them money.

Re: 109

But say you don't go see a movie that you otherwise would have just because one of the main stars is a Scientologist. You're not giving them much money by buying a seven-bucks-or-so movie ticket. And even if it was more money, by not seeing the movie, you're also denying everyone else that worked on the movie money.
(I'm saying this with the assumption that that's at least part of how actors get paid. I don't have extensive knowledge on this stuff).

Re: 109

Sorry, I just don't want to endorse a Scientologist. Plain and simple. So, yes, I have stopped watching movies with Scientologist actors in them, and I have stopped buying albums from Scientologist musicians. If you're paying them, you're paying into the cult - and I'm not about to feed my money into the Church of Scientology.
