You're right--I was thinking of his antisemitic views.

Yeah, but most people in Europe were antisemitic at the time. Antisemitic =/= member of the Nazi party.

I was thinking of his antisemitic views combined with the Nazis adopting his music.

It wasn't just antisemitism though. He thought Jews were like a blight on the nation of Germany. He spoke out against his fellow composers accusing them of not understanding the true nationalistic ideas of Germany... and that their compositions were solely for money and not truly pieces of art. Composers like Mendelssohn.. who is.. amazing.

Lemme just say this, even though I don't really like Angel that much, my inner Buffyverse fan wants to raaaage at Anon comparing him to Edward. At least Angel had something vaguely resembling a personality >_>

Also, iirc, Angel's creepy and questionable behavior tended to earn him repercussions, not an "aw, how romantic!"

It's not like I read an interview or something - I was just listening to his songs over and over (as I tend to do when I really like someone/thing) and I realized there was a thread of disturbingly negative attitudes towards women running through them. Obviously not all of them, but the ones listed in the background of my secret were the ones I found most troubling.

I guess I didn't explain this well enough because everyone's reaction so far has been the same - total bafflement.Perhaps I should do a followup secret.

Also re: Wagner, I think it's a lot easier if the music is sung in a language one doesn't know - yeah, I can still enjoy his music but it's hard when the lyrics are so hateful.

True. It's also easier if those ideas don't come up in the works themselves (I still love Ender's Game despite Orson Scott Card being a homophobic asshole, for instance...).

Yes re: OSC - I love quite a few of his books, but I didn't find the books themselves to be particularly homophobic.

Maybe I'm wrong about JoCo - on the first page they seem to think I'm a troll/"just stupid" - all I know is that the lyrics really bother me, despite the brilliance of the music.

Because obviously people who have a different opinion than them are just trying to get a rise out of them!
